id like to build a 427 stroker from a 71 351w i just bought. iwas planning on getting a kit from coast high performance, along with the kit i need a cam before i take it to a machine shop to get it rebuilt. for this engine what cam would you suggest for drag racing? also would you think that a forged crank and a main girdle would be necessary? id like to race it so i want sqeeze as much power out of it as possible just like anyone else. anyone have any good combos for cam, heads, intake, and carb for this engine????
h-beam vs. I-beam rods, which is better?

Lots of knowledgeable folks here with lots of good answers.
I would have to do some research to come up with a cam recommendation for you, but I'm sure someone else here will have some suggestions.
Forged crank and main girdle? I would, you're putting a stroker kit in that motor and planning to turn some RPMs at the strip, that'll put some stress on the bottom end for sure. H-beam rods are generally considered to be a stronger design then I-beams. What kind of RPMs are you planning to turn, and what does CHP recommend for the kit you're interested in?
Heads, intake, carb? Lots of options these days, what's your budget?
I know some other guys will be along to chime in with recomendations, so just hang loose. -TD
I'd decide more on what you're other parts are going to be before you pick out the actual cam to use.
What kind of hp are you trying to get out of it? You can buy all the h-beams and main girdles you want but that still won't keep the block webs from cracking under high stress. It seems like the general gist is that if you want over 5-600 hp, you need to be looking at a Dart block rather than stock block.
A dart block with forged crank, h beams, forged pistons, main girdle, excellent valvetrain, excellent heads...etc etc...will come out to a nice nice combination.
Doesn't come cheap though, 10 grand can easily be thrown at a motor of this level.
Tell Coast what your doing with this motor. Also know your trans and rear gear ratio that you'll be using, vehicle appoximate weight and the rpms you wanna run. Also don't buy the kit til you have the block checked and know if the engine will need bored and how much. Coast will be able to help you 'match' the parts for you to get the most outta the motor. If you plan to run over 6grand then a girdle isn't a bad thing.
Good luck and keep us up to date with your progress on it.
thanks alot , i will let you know what i come up with after i give these companies a call. There will be a c4 tranny behind it(not in its stock form of course) and a 9 inch rear end with gears somewhere between 3.83 and 4.10. as for money, i plan on selling an 86 cj7 that i built a while back, the money will go towards the engine and a project stang.
