Whats everyones thoughts on them? Are they safe? I got a buddy of mine who is going to get some for his 97 f150 and my mom is looking for new tires but she is concerned about their safety. Whats the Pros and Cons of retreads? Anyone on here use them?
I had my Superswampers retreaded but they are strictly for offroad use. They have just as much grip and cleanout ability as when they were new, but I was always worried that they would shred if I hit anything hidden in the mud. They finally started to dry rot to bad to use, but I never did blow any up on the trails or anything. I know of a lot of guys in my area that buy mud tires that are just shy of being slicks and retread them, but like me, strictly for off road use. I don't trust them on roads, getting hot and stuff. Especially if I were to put a load in the truck or on a trailer.
the ones that dont have a seam across the tread are good as far as i know. they are made in a complete circle and shrink fitted to the casing. i have driven several big trucks with heavy loads using them with no problems. retreads have come a long way over the years.
I have strongly debated some retreads several times. Go to Treadwright.com. They are a highly reputable retreading company and have a complete explanation on there page of the retread process and consumer reviews. Best part? A $300 tire retreaded costs about $100. And you can still get a super aggressive MT tire. Once my tires wear out on my 250, I will more than likely get retreads
I got the Warden AT from Treadwright in 31 10.50 for a spare. It looks like a BFG AT. The tire looks good, and I trust it for a spare. I don't think I'd be comfortable with them on all 4 though. I guess it depends on the way the truck is used.
I put retreads from treadwright on my jeep cherokee when I was into jeeps. The jeep was my daily driver as well as my hunting/camping vehicle. Saw some pretty heavy off road use and a lot of highway miles. Never had a problem with the tires and they still had good tread when I sold the jeep. I considered getting them when I got new tires for my f150,but found some interco trxus m/t's for a good price instead.
