Hey guys i normally hang out in the OBS Forums but here lately ive been wanting something a little newer. Ive been searching around on Craigslist and Ive found two 2001 crew cab F150s both with the 5.4 engine in them. one has 140k miles and the other 150k miles. My question is how reliable are these vehicles? How many miles can you get out of them? I know we have had/have a couple 95's with over 200k and running good as new! Ive also got a friend with a 97 4.6 and is on his second motor and had nothing but trouble and another friend with an 01 5.4 with absolute no problems at all! What years were the problem childs with these vehicles and how many miles can i expect to get out of these trucks?
Thanks for all the help guys! Im looking forward to getting to hang out in this section of the forum maybe!
I've got an 01 F150 2WD that's pushing 180k and still running like a champ, and a 99 F150 4WD that just turned 170k. I'm starting to see small things on the 99 but the miles on it are hard miles
'99s seemed to be the worst but all in all they were a good run of trucks. Mine has a quarter million miles with nothing major. The early 4.2L's had some coolant leak issues.
i bought my 2001 with 125,000 miles. Has 230,000 now. Runs great. Only real problem i had is water jacket o-ring failed on the crossover on the intake manifold. Leaked out antifreeze. Caused overheating and i think that caused a pin hole in head gasket. I put copper sealer in to plug the gasket, after i fixed the manifold and cross over. Leak caused a couple COPS to fail...... Alternator lasted 160k miles, normal brake and ball joint replacement. Trans runs great. Good truck.
Bought my '01 new, now has 215K.
never had major issues. never had a check engine lite. Still has original Cat, O-2 sensors and plugs(i know a big no-no). 98% of the time I run Chevron.
Did have a mysterious issue with the ignition not recognizing the coded key. Which resolved itself after aboout 3 months.
Just yesterday the cruise control failed. Hit the "On" button, hit the "Set/Accel" button and the Cruise lite just flikkers and does not engage.
My 2000 4.6 auto has 107,000 miles on it. Ive had this truck for 5yrs and do regular maintance on it. There has been times where I has let the oil change go farther than I liked but who hasnt done that from time to time. In 5yrs Ive changed 2 coil packs and spark plugs and my over drive wont turn off so I wont tow anything really heavy. Everything works except the o/d button and I plan on keeping this truck for along time. When you look at a truck make sure everything looks nice and took care of. You can tell when a truck has been took care of even if it has been used.
I have a 2000 f150 with the 5.4. I bought it in 07 with 33000 on it. it now has about 120. I havent been easy on it one day since I bought it. I stacked firewood in it from front to back (tailgate open) and as high as the roof, constantly. I tow a 773 bobcat with it often. When I built my retaining wall, some of the rocks were loaded into it with an excavator . I had to cut 4x4s to put in between the frame and the axle to keep the trailer hitch from dragging. When the rails under the bed finally crushed down and it was about to fall off, i took it off and installed a flat bed dump. Now I do deliveries of topsoil gravel stone etc.
I have only put brakes in it twice. I change the oil when i remember to. I have never changed the transmission fluid, a spark plug, a COP, IAC or any other of those handy other acronyms. I did change the alternator. and put a battery in it. The neutral safety switch quit on me so i ran a push button to the starter. That was the only time it never started for me. It starts when its 20 below and it starts when its 100 above. I would drive this truck anywhere inthe world today. It shows no signs of giving up anytime soon. So to answer your question, yes I would say that they are reliable.
218,000 on my 2000 4x4 5.4. Still like brand new. No leaks. No knocks. Burns less than a quart between changes.
Knock on wood.....
Just made five 80 mile round trips today (400 total) pulling a trailer hauling hay rolls and it didn't skip a beat. I love my 2000 with this many miles. I took it in a few days ago to get an alignment, but they wouldn't do it until i change my idler arm. Got the Moog part from Rockauto and hope to change it one afternoon this week.
My 2004, well its a good truck at 168,000, but I just don't like it as well. The seats are less comfortable, Supercab doors rattle, engine rattles with the phasers, steering has vibrated from day 1, pinion seal is seeping, driver side axle seal is seeping. I plan to sell my 2004 soon, but I hope to keep my 2000 for a long time.
