I have the 76 390 with the same year c6 and I would like to put this in a 79 super cab ,but I see that the neutral safety switch is on the shifter ,which I got from a junk yard ,so it looks like I need to remove the lever from the same transmission i got the switch off of but all the manuals I have do not say how or if it can be done ,and if not what could be my next option
thanks ahead of time and here is some eye candy
First, is the case you're using a '76? If it is, check to see that the case has the two bosses that are needed to mount the switch. If it does then you'll need to switch the manual gear selector, that's what Ford calls it.
1) Remove pan and drain fluid.
2) Remove nut that holds kickdown lever to shaft.
3) Remove filter and valve body.
4) Slide the kickdown shaft towards the clutch drum.
5) Snake a 7/8" box end wrench over the kickdown shaft and remove nut that retains the manual gear selector shaft.
6) Pull shaft out and remove old seal.
7) Install new seal and slide new shaft into place.
Then reassemble everything.
Probably the hardest part to the whole project is getting the valve body and shift/kickdown levers lined up.
mike to the rescue
yes the 76 does have screwholes for the switch just not the grove in the lever and lucky for me the tranny is still without fluid
I think the hardest part will be getting the yard to flip the truck over for me unless someone sells the lever
