Transmission is gone

I have a 2004 Excursion 4x4 V10 that needs a new tranny. The dealer wants $3800 for a Ford rebuilt unit and R&R. I really don't want to spend this much and was going to look in the bone yards for a replacement and get an independant to R&R. What years will interchange and are some years better than others? Any additional info is welcome.

You should be able to get that rebuilt for under $2800.00, I wouldn't use a junk yard transmission.

I would rather have mine rebuilt and I've started looking for someone to do it. I see you're in N.GA. and I'm east of Atlanta in Madison. Know anyone around here that can do it?

Went back to the dealer this morning and worked a deal with them. Their estimate included the cooler and labor to replace it which was another $440. Looks like it will be around $3400 for a Ford rebuilt unit with a 3 year warranty and the cooler replacement.
