I don't know much about the H.E.I. distributors, but from what I've always heard, the DSII distributor is just as good as the H.E.I., the Mallory, and the MSD distributors.
Dont get me wrong, Ibleed blue. But having an OLD truck and hacked wireing from the po as well as parts avaliability i.e. harness, dosen't this make SOME sence?
Unless the factory wiring is gone and you have to start from scratch, the H.E.I. offers absolutely NOTHING over the stock Motorcraft Duraspark ignition. And the only time the aftermarket racing ignition systems (MSD, Accel, etc.) makes any difference at all is if you drag race your truck and consistently keep your truck above 5,000 RPMs.
As far as parts availability goes, you should be able to walk into ANY parts house in ANY town and get a stock replacement Duraspark ignition module, coil, distributor, spark plugs, and wires right off the shelf.
Very true indeed. I ordered a MSD coil some years back, only to find out it is no better or worse than the original equipment one. Oh well, I needed a new one anyway.
I've used the HEI on a windsor for several yeadrs before I sold the truck and it never gave me any problems.I had swapped out the OEM for the same reason as you(PO messed up wiring).I currently run a HEI on a 460 in a '88 f250 because it was the simplest route for the EFI to carb swap. The key to the HEI is to stay away from the garbage ones on flea-bay.Mine were both Summit brands, but I returned the 460 one as it was acting up,and replaced it with a Mallory.I think every system has weak and strong aspects. It boils down to $ and personal taste/choice.I grew up working on Chevys and actually refused to upgrade my rides to HEI way back in the 80's.I ran points distributors for years before I "came around".
