i just bought an accel dual point distributor off of ebay for 26 dollars. if i get a hotter coil and an msd 6a ar 6al ignition box will that ignition be just as good as an electric ignition.
Nice buy! Altho the dual point distributor will work just as well as the electronic when brand new, the points begin to wear immediately, causing less than optimum ignition. The electronic will always run at top performance until something goes bad, the advantage to the electronic is the reduced maintainance and consistent performance. I would use the electronic always. It is possible to get a Pertronix conversion for the Accel distributor.
...Or just go to AutoZone or Napa and pick up a stock replacement post-1975 distributor that will fit your engine. You can use a Duraspark II or even better, an MSD 6A like you said to fire it. A stock replacement electronic distributor is better than an expensive aftermarket points distributor. Factory electronic distributors are usually tougher than aftermarket ones anyway. I had to drop in a factory distributor after a 17-volt spike toasted my MSD Pro-Billet dist, and the factory unit was able to handle it until I got the voltage regulated correctly.
my duraspark ignition module burned out today it was running fine then i killed it at a friends house and when i tried to crank it, it would not and i noticed that there was melted stuff around the module. so i got a ride back to my house and i picked one off of my 78 lwb f100 and hooked it up. it cranked right up. i knew that was it. oh yeah and my plugs are burned up already and they are new platinums, so i guess the are a heat range that is too high.
Well, no it won't. Dual point dizzys were created to increase coil saturation time by a few degrees, but they can never match the consistant maximum dwell that the electronics offer. The points also have about 2 1/2 amps primary current, whereas the duraspark has about 4 amps. So no matter what you do with points, they'll never be as good as your duraspark already is. DF
