I converted my '88 f250 4x4 from 302 efi to carbed 460 and I haven't looked back.I also swapped in a 1980 C6 and a single 33 gal. Bronco fuel tank w/3/8" steel fuel line to the carb.Holley 110gph mech. fuel pump.HEI one wire dizzy(also hooked up my factory tach).I run a Comp Cams 554" 574" flat tappet, ported C9VE heads,Crane Gold roller rockers, long tube headers w/true dual exhaust.Stealth intake w/Holley 3310.It sounds great and has more power than I expected.Makes the truck feel light.I already need new back tires. The truck is emissions exempt where I live(its rated as a one ton).I was able to convert everything by looking on this site and 460ford.com.It is relatively easy to do.I'm to old to learn how to hop up efi systems, plus the cost is prohibitive.I have a 2006 GTO that runs low 12 sec,but every time I want to change something(engine related) I have to bring it to my tuner to optimize the the changes.I didn't want to do that with my truck.I did all the work myself and can fix/upgrade anything on it.

Stick with EFI. These Ford EEC-IV systems are not hard to figure out and tune if needed.

Then a carb swap and trying to figure out a standalone transmission controller will be way over your head.

Carb swap is a bolt on minus routing fuel lines and throttle cables, which I will admit, the throttle cable would be a pain. Tranny controller is plug and play also. Im just thinkin it might be cheaper to keep my EFI in the long run

What do you expect 500 horse for $500. Over on another forum one of the members has a tag line in his signature... Speed is expensive, how fast do you want to go$...
Ther is no magic bullet, horsepower cost money. Just swapping from efit to carb will not make a ton more power unless you spend money on cam, heads, carb, trans controller. Supercharger and a custom tuned chip, cost money.

If you want to make power sell the truck and buy a pre-computer trruck with a C6 trans or a manual, then it will be a little cheaper to make power, but to make big power will still cost big money.

And let me let you in on a dirty little secret about power....

You never have enough

..and you still have to switch to a DuraSpark II distributor and ignition setup if you actually want ignition advance. Then you have to get a fuel pressure regulator to drop the pressure down to 5-8 PSI. The transmission controller needs a throttle position signal to function properly - not many carbs have the ability to be fitted with one of those.

There is a lot to this swap you're missing, and in the end you'll just have a truck that gets worse fuel economy, worse drivability and poor cold weather start up.

Then on the other hand, you can get a '94-95 F-150 5.0 E4OD MAF computer for $100, swap it in, add the 8 wires to the computer plug to make it work. Get a $70 Lighting MAF and then find a local Mustang tuning shop to tune it for you, or spend $300 and get a Moates QuarterHorse + Binary editor to tune it yourself.

You'll end up with a truck that gets acceptable mileage, great drivability, great cold start up performance and is infinitely tunable to any mods you could think of.

We've got the same setup above running a Turbo 460 E4OD setup without issue. It was NOT hard to figure out. I'm not trying to be rude, but the fact that you didn't even know you have to unplug the SPOUT connector to check timing tells me you still have a lot to learn.

For me it was/is. If you want to gain that understanding of EEC-IV, it's invaluable. Plus it's much cheaper than the Ford Emissions Diagnosis Manual. I think it's better when it comes to explaining system theory of operation.

Download the book with the link from Evan_P. Thanks for it by the way! Thats pretty sweet.

Study that book and learn about what you have. It definitely gave me a greater appreciation and more confidence to tinker with sensors and whatnot.

Iv owned my truck for a month lol. honestly, EVERYTHING I know about my truck, Iv learned off this website! Thats why I post random threads like this, ask tons of questions, and dont know everything about a late 90s era truck. Im on the heavy learning curve! I would love to learn how to tune computers and it sounds like itll be the way to go. thanks for the explanations guys. Sometimes ya gotta be stern with me to get it through my head!
