I took my 2006 6.0 in to a local shop for a blown egr cooler. I had him replace the stock system with a bulletproof diesel oil cooler and egr cooler. Also had him upgrade the hpop fitting and repair the FICM.
When I picked the truck up, it didnt even make it out of the parking lot before acting up. Drove back to his shop where he plugged in the scanner and even test drove it. told me to bring it back in a week when he got back from vacation. On the way home it wouldnt go past 50mph and threw a code, i think it was p2284- injector circuit... i cant remember the rest ill have to rescan it in the a.m.
Before i left i asked what he thought it was, he said he thinks its the actual hpop, because it had been stressed due to the fitting which was leaking but never burst apart. Made sense to me I guess, I just dont know if I have heard of the actual hpop going out, and if it relates to that code?
What do you guys think? Does this sound like a reasonable possibility?
While the above is part of my issue right now, I discovered something new tonight while putting my battery tender on. (truck has sat for a week).
Coolant in the degas bottle is green! I have only used ford premium gold, as i have seen what happens when the green stuff gets added into a 6.0.
Looking at my invoice, I was charged for 2 gal of coolant (doesnt say what brand), BG cooling system sealer, BG cooling system super cool.
Now my question here, could one of these "BG" additives change the color of the coolant?
This tech was a ford diesel tech for several years and came highly recommended by my best friend who has his fleet of fords from the 7.3 to the 6.7 serviced.
I am planning on buying a scanguage tomorrow so i ca get some icp ad ipr readings, or aything else you guys need lol. Thank you for readin all of this I know it is long. Just wanna make sure im not being takin on a ride...
Hard to say without some readings. I live in the area and we can plug in my SGII tomorrow if need be. I'm guessing you took it to John's Diesel Performance?
You need to play Ricky and ask the guy why he used green Ricky Ricardo (I Love lucy): 'Lucy, you've got some ' splainin to do!'
It could be that he is not a 6.0 guy
naw i know hes a 6.0 guy, i think all ford techs have to be by now lol, I was just thinkin maybe it was a dumb mistake, i know things like that happen once in a while.
doin some reading it appears some coolant additives can change the color from yellow to green, so im guessing thats it, but ill have to double check with him when i take it back in.
I may have jumped the gun a little bit, saw green i there and instantly freaked out.
If anyone can confirm with this brad though please do.
Me2, I need to buy the sc2 anyways, might as well get er now lol
Id also like to add that the truck has long crank times when initially starting, and a varying idle when cold, and not quite as bad when its warm. Also ICP and pigtails are new.
I would be extremely ticked at the BG coolant additives. I sure wouldn't want this kind of stuff done to my truck without first getting asked if it is OK (and I would refuse to let it be done)! Come on - an ex tech using a coolant sealer!!!!!????
I would be extremely ticked at the BG coolant additives. I don't want this kind of stuff done to my truck without getting asked if it is OK! Come on - especially a coolant sealer!!!!!???? This guy isn't a dealership Tech - at least not anymore I would bet!
That sealer ,ay just seal up some thing that should flow.
Oil cooler comes to mind first.
Don't assume that because some one worked for Ford that
they know all the packages in use and how to deal with
each and what not to do to them.
The sealers he put in are a no no . Your new cooler not new anymore . And just wondering how much you are into him so far for the work . And one more thing if he fixed it and test drove it he had to know it wasn't right , but said it was done . What does that tell you about him

They should have been 6.0 guys when the 6.0 was still in production, but quite a few of them weren't then, so why would you think that they would by now? I still hear of people dealing with the same mistakes done by Ford techs.
The one nice thing that they have as an excuse is the supposed "well deserved" reputation of the 6.0.
There are just so many things wrong with thinking that just because he was a Ford tech (sometimes there are negative reasons why they are an "ex-Ford tech") and just because your best friend recommended him that he knows his way around the 6.0.
It sounds like it's your first experience with him and in my mind, it isn't that bang up of an experience.
Also I have to agree with this

Especially if it flopped that quickly. Of course, the option is that he actually test drove it or had a competent person test drive it. It was right before he was going to go on vacation. That's close enough to having something built on a friday if you ask me.
He may or may not be a good tech. I do know that he was more concerned with his vacation than that truck.... I would guess since oil cooler is a 8 hour job or so he started it friday morning. Finished around 4. Test drove it.... realized he is leakin some coolant and or messed up HPO and dumped some sealant in it so he could be out the door by 5....
I am sorry. But come back in a week would make me blow a head gasket. I could understand if there was a problem while I was in there I noticed this wrong.... I can order the part it will be in a week from now. OR we can expedite the order at a cost of $$ and get part here monday. That is about the only reason for come back in a week. Call me crazy. I have 3 standards for my vehicles.
1. My standard this is the quality I try to run... where I clean off the parts and everything is wiped down before goin back in.
2. Shop Standard. I expect to be informed of status of truck. Communication is the key. If a problem comes up let me know and WE decide what to do. Get it working.
3. The buddy is over.... helping me out.... if he has to take off on vacation.... well that is different.
And one more thing if he fixed it and test drove it he had to know it wasn't right , but said it was done . What does that tell you about him
+1
I ALWAYS take the odometer reading (including decimal) when ever I leave any of my vehicles in anywhere for service.
Folks really need to be doing a better job of looking out for THEMSELVES and THEIR interests. Not just some posters on this forum, but on other ones I'm a member of too, folks don't seem to be thinking for themsleves.
