I would go a bit farther and say a good mechanic is of value.
I am not talking a tech that sticks part A in when the
computer tells them to. A real mechanic would know
that part A failed because part B is also bad even if
the computer says it's good.

Any good mechanic will tell you it takes time, talent
and desire to become good. Some thing that a lot of people
now a day don't have. They want it NOW and EASY.

.... and it comes back to that classic line that I get from customers coming into my dealer all the time, "C'mon man, can't you just hook that thingy up and it'll tell you what's wrong with it?" If only it were that simple all the time. What about trying to explain to customers the difference between CONDITION generated DTCs versus COMPONENT generated DTCs versus CIRCUIT generated DTCs? Or better yet, how about when NO DTCs are set? I have said it time and time again to many customers, just as I'll say to all of you here on the forum. It's much easier to replace a component than it is to actually go through the process to determine the cause of a failure. I had a gentleman who met me off the internet wanting me to fix a grocery list of concerns on his Excursion not too long ago, one of which was his passenger rear window wasn't working. He was ready to give me the money needed for the cost of a new window motor along with my labour to replace it. As it turned out, the cause was an open wire in the c-pillar. How do you think things would've played out, had I gone ahead and replaced the window motor and still had it not working? There I would be, categorized as yet another "glorified parts replacer".

I guess I like to know why some thing did what it did.
So I tend to dig a bit to find out why.So I ask questions.
That used to really burn some of my class mates up
that I was waisting (right spelling ?) there time with my questions.
There are some of then I would not let put there hands on my
car let alone any aircraft I may be in.
People are in too much of a hurry. You can't rush a good job.
I do every job from the reading light to the landing gear the same.
Like one mistake and some one gets hurt.
