So, part way through my engine swap, I break a sensor. I didn't think 92's had knock sensors, but that's what I'm finding. I'm also finding that no one has one. Can someone tell me if that's what it is? It's on the back of the block, behind the intake. If that's what it is, can I bypass it?
Yeah that's the knock sensor all the 5.0s have them, if you can't find one new pull one from a scrapyard motor, and if doing that it's much easier to get at it in a van after removing the doghouse cover in the cab. You could leave the connector hanging too, it will likely throw a code and may or may not set the check engine light, but that asside it won't have much impact on engine operation.
You are correct, you broke off the knock sensor. It was used on the 4.9L and the 5.0L engines, but not the 5.8L or 7.5L. They are tough to find, but as luck would have it Rockauto.com has them on wholesaler closeout for ~$30 USD. Search on Standard Motor Products KS13.
I am not sure if you will get a Check Engine Light with it disconnected, but I know for sure you will fail one of the KOER tests.
Ok, I'd order one, but the motor had to go back in and I would need to chase threads for it since I broke the old one off. I just wrapped the whole thing with tape & tied it up. I wonder if a resistor or something would keep it from throwing a code and CEL...
You won't get a code or have any issues with the connector being unplugged.
What was me mentioned about all 4.9 and 302s having knock sensors, was that all the efi trucks and vans had them... Not all on the planet.
5.0 Mustangs don't have them either, or mid size cars. Only trucks. Not sure why the 5.8 and 7.5 didn't but oh well.
