Read numerous threads looking for proper OBD-2 device to acquire for my ABS problem. I read on one that the "normal" OBD-2 readers will not scan for ABS codes and a "professional" grade one is required. Is this true? I have the ABS light on (2000 F350 4WD auto crew V10) and would like to determine which wheel it is on before digging into all of them. If professional grade is required, I'll have to run it in to the shop and mechanic. Check engine light is NOT on. Thank you.
The technology change from year to year and in last years it changes fast.
OBD II will show you a code, but on safety issues will not erase it. Than newer vehicles can pinpoint the error, but that require expensive computer with subscription.
Seriously??? The communications protocols haven't changed since 2004. Models change significantly every 4-7 years.
You need a scan tool that can communicate with the needed modules. You need access to the code definitions, ie, the workshop manuals which are readily available on ebay.
This ain't rocket science but it is technology-driven.
I was at oriley auto the other day and they had a display of code readers. A couple could read ABS codes. But for the cost of the most expensive one ($250) might as well get an AE.
Suppose Iphones can be equipped with OBD II cable that reads auto codes. I don't own one, as I am waiting for the one with optional drawer for delivering pizza.
I didn't buy an Iphone but took the truck in to the Ford Stealership. For $90 they IDed the RF ABS sensor (F350 4WD). Quoted me a total od $529-$600 to repair. Said the sensor was about $250. I opted out. So it looks like my weekend project. I see NAPA has the part for about $139 and there are others in various price ranges. Suspect I should get sensor and harness. Yes? What manufacturers/brand should I avoid and are there any special things I need to know before tackling this replacement? Special tools? Pretty straight forward? I can't afford to start and get hung up. Thanks.
Rock auto has Dorman part #970021 for $47.79. If you don't mind waiting a few days for it to be shipped that seems a good deal. Dorman makes good products. The last time I order parts through rock auto I had them in 2 days
