Hypertech chip

Who has a Hypertech chip and what do you think of it? Also, which one do you have?

Thanks for the reply bcaughhorn.

A friend got a 2000 this year with a tuner already installed (he thinks it is a Hypertech) and insists his mpg is ~23 local driving (using a calculator). I am happy for him.
I am only interested in another chip if i get more mpg's and am willing to invest in one for another 5 mpg's.

My 2000 is pushing 17 on int. Now mine is cc and 4wd so that will bring the mileage down some. I have a friend with a 2wd cc and he has had the truck since it was new. He said he gets 20 and his is bone stock. I don't think you will see a 5 mpg increase. 23 is a little hard to see for local driving too

Take the 23mpg with a grain of salt. I dout it really. At least I never seen anybody get that when they drove with me. That said, the six speed trans dose well on mpg unloaded. Hope I don't open a can of worms here, but thats my experience. If your buying a tuner to get 5mpg extra, thats the wrong reason to buy.

Why is an extra 5 mpg the wrong reason? Overall, i am pleased with my truck.

Because that's an unrealistic number for any chip to make claims to. I've hammered my wallet in search of the difficult 20 MPG and attained it on long-legged trips. I can get much better MPG if I fuel up in the mountains and refill in the valley, or have a crazy tail wind on a trip over 60 MPH - which I suspect is one way to get 23 MPG on a tank. The Superduty weighs between 7000 and 8500 pounds, depending on how it's equipped - and it doesn't lend itself to getting over 20 MPG easily. The OBS with the 7.3L is much lighter and can get numbers like that, if properly maintained, configured, and driven.

In my experience, the tuner doesn't bump the economy, but it can give more performance without sacrificing MPG. Repairs to existing equipment is where I have acquired all my economy gains. A good mod for economy would be to shed some pounds off the truck or improve the aerodynamics - or just increase tire pressure.

I agree with this totally. God bless,

Chet

Refer to my second post. The Chip is not making this claim, my friend is sharing the mpg info with me about his 2000.
I am missing something concerning OBS. Can you enlighten me?

Sorry.... FTE-speak for Original/Old Body Style. Pre-Superduty 250s and 350s with 7.3Ls weren't quite as advanced as our engines (electronics-wise), but they deliver the goods and the much lighter body makes for a spry rig.

In the case of your friend hand-calculating 23 MPG on a Superduty, I don't doubt his veracity - I just question the precise conditions of his success. If you're getting 18 in daily driving conditions, you are doing very well. I do that every day, but it takes a laaawwwng drive with cruise control and no stops, headwind, mountains, air conditioning, traffic, or comets in the sky to pop the 20 MPG mark. The general experience here is 20-21 is maxing it out, but I've heard rumors of better. One good way to increase economy with a chip is to depower the heck out of it to force driving it as if an egg was on the go pedal.
