installed stock air cleaner today - what a difference!

What a difference in noise levels! When I bought my truck it had an AFE cold air intake system installed. It seemed fine but from racing experience I know that those oiled cloth filters don't actually filter very well. Great on an engine that you expect to rebuild every 50 hours anyway, but I don't like them on a street vehicle. I got in touch with the first owner of my truck and he had kept the stock setup - an hours drive and it was in the bed of the truck.

Today I had the time so I pulled the AFE kit out and installed the stock system. Had the opportunity to check the turbo impeller - immaculate. I had never even seen a stock setup installed so it was a bit of a meccano set, but I got it all put together.

First impression - how the heck are you supposed to get the air filter end caps on? It is not easy getting those tabs in place, there has to be a trick. What is it?

Second impression - it is really quiet compared to the AFE. I thought it was broken, way down on power but all it was is no noise when I step on the gas. It goes fine - just is quiet while it pulls away from a stop, so I tend to accelerate a lot harder.

Third impression - the AFE kit is pulling air from inside the engine compartment. There is a big baffle plate, but nothing pulling outside air in. The stock air filter draws air from the front valence area, completely outside the hot engine compartment. It has to be colder air than the performance kit - so why do they call them cold air intakes?

Anyone want a complete AFE kit?

Brian

There is a video of how to do the stock filter setup as an almost complete assembly (I don't have the link) that will allow you to R&R the whole thing in less than 15 minutes (if you're old and slow like me--LOL)

I pull the two small hoses off of the degass bottle, loosen the retaining bolts, and then push the bottle to the side. Now the complete air filter assembly can be placed in the truck.
