I have an 01 supercab. 5.4 Triton 135k. I have begun to smell coolant the last couple of days. Have seen nothing leaking and truck doesn't run hot.
Will investigate more this weekend
Does anyone know where to start looking for this. It has to be leaking somewhere. Windows don't fog and the smell is there all the time. I live in florida so don't use much heat.
Not the heater core. Heat works fine and no smell from the vents.
Ironically it is still probably in the heater core. wether using the heat or not the water/coolant still passes through on its way from the engine back to the radiator. catching the smell early with could be a good thing, buts its still a couple day job for the home mechanic. the whole dash must be removed.
Mine did same thing.
When on & warm can smell it with window/door open. When off can smell it at grill area. No drips, coolant level going down slowly. Replaced radiator ($150 Autozone, in stock). Problem solved. When warm & running i guess fan would blow smell towards cab area, when off smell would linger around front end.

Thanks much, you might be right. That is what mine does. with windows up and a/c on can't smell it inside.
My 97 F-150 developed the same exact smell yesterday. After reading a 20 page instruction sheet that somebody posted on the internet about how to remove the dash and heater core, I'm becoming a big fan of that Stop Leak stuff too. Good grief! Life is too short!
Could be a leak in a hose on top the intake manifold and is just evaporating, hence the smell. Also could be a slow leaking and evaporating HC leak It's time for the process of elimination to diagnose the problem.
i dont know what your using, but i have had very good luck with BARS liquid copper. About $10 a bottle at Auto Zone. Suppose to plug small holes in head gasket, cracked heads and manifold leaks.. I had very good luck for 3-4 years now. I redo every 12 months.
have a pics or instructions on how you do it. I can do most anything but this looks like alot of work. If i can get some illustrations then maybe I won't waste so much time trying to figure it out
