No heat

I have a 1997 f150 that all of a sudden the heater is not blowing hot air when on. Now I've looked at coolant which incidentaly is a milky brown but oil level is fine. If one of you folks good give me a little guidance on where to proceed from here I'd be greatful. tks

Are both heater core hoses hot to the touch? If only one is, your "milky brown" coolant may have plugged the core. If both are hot, you probably have a blend door problem.

The "milky brown" coolant may be a sign of a head gasket going bad, and exhaust gas passing into the cooling system. At idle you can remove the radiator cap and check for gas bubbles and exhaust smell. But be careful, the radiator may be under pressure, don't get burned by hot coolant!

First off tks. for replying. The answer is no I have not, I purchased truck approx. 4 yrs. ago and have never flushed radiator. truck has approx. 93k miles. The blower works, the fuses connected work. Is your suggestion to flush radiator and put in new coolant? Let me know, tks.

There are 2 small hoses running from the engine to the firewall on the passenger side; those are the heater core hoses.

The 'milky brown' coolant is shot and has to go, you need to flush the cooling system. Drain the antifreeze, then disconnect the hoses - upper and lower radiator and both heater hoses - and remove the thermostat. This is a good time to replace the thermostat and check the hoses for wear/firmness/cracks and replace if needed. I like to use a garden hose and flush the radiator from both directions, flush engine from both directions (where the radiator hoses were attached) and flush the heater core from both directions. Do this until you get clean water coming out the other side (be prepared for a big wet mess). Then reconnect hoses, install thermostat and fill with correct strength antifreeze. This may take care of the heat problem too... but needs to be done regardless.
