i have a 1999 f350 with the 5.4 in it, i started hearing a knocking noise, which has progressively gotten worse. is there anything i can try to cure this without having to do a complete teardown? trying to save money, so would rather spend a little rather than a lot if u know what i mean... suggestions?
the truck only has 105,000 and my friend worried me by saying it could be the crank bearing, other people said they didnt think that cause of the amount of miles
I've heard a lot of 5.4s and 4.6s with this "knock"
I think it has something to do with the timing chains, but I'm not 100% sure. Me and my dad(who is an ASE certified master mechanic) came to this conclusion after he fixed someone's 5.4 in a 98 f150 that broke a timing chain. They thought they toasted the motor until we looked at it and saw the broken timing chain. They complained of a knock also. We ended up replacing the heads and both timing chains and the vehicle never knocked since.
