I recently purchased a 1999 F250 with the 5.4 litre engine with 112k miles on it. Shortly thereafter I started noticing what I think is bearing noise after the engine is started in the morning. It lasts about 1 minute until oil pressure is up to normal and everything should be lubricated.
My interpretation of the noise is that it sounds like rod and main bearings starting to wear to the point of getting noisy at cold start time.
I took the truck to the local Ford dealership who kept it for 3 days to diagnose it with the Top Techs. AFter paying $150.00 for this diagnosis I was told that it was normal engine noise.
Is that normal or should I be concerned enough to go to another dealer and pay more money for the same diagnosis. I also purchased an extended warranty on the truck so that should not be an issue.
Any info would be appreciated. Email with suggestions.
What you may have is "piston slap", a noise that lasts anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes. My dad has a '97 with a 5.4. The engine has a little ove 200K on it and has made that noise ever since he owned it.
You could read all about it if you do a search using "piston slap" and looking under "5.4" or "V10" forums in our search engine at the top of the page.
thanks for the replies, appreciate it very much. I am from the old school which believes that any noise, not normal is bad. I hear that kind of noise and to me it ain't normal and shouldn't be there. But, from what I have been hearing, apparently the engineers are desigining things to be noisy now. Will let it go for a while and see what happens. If it blows, I guess I am covered with the diagnosis from the Ford dealer and my extended warranty......
One other question, been thinking about putting a chip in it to enhance?? the performance. any thoughts on that? Cost and effectiveness are the concerns for me with it right now.
