I have been reading a lot of things on the 5.4 about knocks and pings ect. My question is i have a 98 f-150 with 73k that i bought a year ago.. it had 63k then, when it is real cold out it makes a rattling noise when it is very frist started and goes away quick....
when it is not very cold around 40 or so when i start it it seems to have more of a deep knock... as soon as it warms up it seems to go away, the noise is not in the top end of the motor, really can only hear it if you are under the truck or like in a drive thru.. just was wondering if this could be the piston slap i have read about.
thanks
It does sound like you've got piston slap.
Last week one of the guys in the shop had the same problem and called Ford's Technical Hotline to see if there was any news on that. They said that other than the noise it makes it isn't causing any problems so don't worry about it. It's kinda hard explaining that to someone that just bought the truck though
ok thanks a lot, that is better then a spun bearing or flywheel witch is the way i was leaning,,,, other then the noise i have no complaints.. thaks again....
sounds like it. I believe Ford issued an extended warranty on that problem, including a new short block!! It's been a while since I read up on it. I'll check it out, and get back.
Ok guys, here's the scoop. Ford has not yet officially released a warranty. They are seriously considering releasing an extended warranty covering the piston slap problem, and oil leaks, but have not done so yet. They have notified all of the dealerships of the possibility of this to resolve the well known problems. I'll set up a new thread about it if I find out they do go ahead and issue it. And it's possible your truck could be covered by it. They haven't stated any kind of intended mileage coverage, but I know on the Explorer 4.0 OHCs, they issued an extended waranty covering timing components up to 85K. My dad's truck has this problem, but I didn't worry before about waranty, cause he has 250K on his.
