I know this may have already been ask, but...I'm running a SCT 3015 tuner on my 2006 6.0. I've thought about putting an EGR delete kit in it. Now I want to know if I just program the EGR valve to stay closed does this work the same as an EGR delete kit???
Yes and no. Keeping the EGR valve closed with the tuner will prevent exhaust gasses from going into the intake but the EGR cooler will still be open to the exhaust on the back side. Without the hot exhaust moving through it the EGR cooler will have an easier life but i think it will still get pretty hot. Also, the coolant will still pass through the cooler. Some EGR delete kits re-route the coolant as well as block the exhaust. The benefit to doing it with the software is the same as far as performance gains and keeping the carbon build up out of the rest of the engine, and it can easily be reversed. The down side is any coolant leaking inside the cooler will find it's way into the cylinders.
I would be more comfortable with this on an '03-'04 truck with the round EGR cooler or the Bullet Proof Diesel cooler on a later truck.
Not really. A true "EGR delete" is when someone has removed the cooler and replaced it with aftermarket parts that (A) keep unfiltered air from entering the intake and (B) keep the coolant moving. What your talking about is a tuner that commands the valve to remain closed most of the time. You still have the hot exhaust in the cooler. Since you have an '06...if the oil cooler plugs and starves the EGR cooler...it's more likely to rupture and leak coolant into the exhaust and can be drawn into the intake. Which would introduce it into the engine and possibly hydro-lock the engine.
