I have a 2005 Excursion LTD with the 6.0 Diesel. It just turned 104k. The temp gauge has been moving a little more than usual. Since the extended warrenty I got with the truck expires at 107.5k I took it to my local for Dealer to take a look. Here's what he said.
1) The EGR Cooler is leaking and will need to be replaced 650.00
The warrenty dosen't cover this. What?? I thought it was bumper to
bumper.
2) We always replace the oil cooler with EGR because it's likely worn and
damaged by the leaking coolent. This is covered. 1900.00 if not.
3) The turbo Feels like it is sticking. Might just need the vanes cleaned or be
broken and need replace(its not responsive. Will boost ok most the time.)
Last but not least the extended warrenty is through National and they now want ALL my service records before they will authorized the repair. I don't have ALL my service records some of the oil changes I did myself WTF!! Has anyone dealt with this or National extended warrenty group?
Have not dealt with National warranty, but doing the egr cooler and oil cooler together is legit. If you have a scan gauge you can monitor coolant temp and oil temp to see what the difference is between them. They should be close (5 degrees) under normal driving. I bet yours are more than 15 degrees apart which Ford says is bad....it is.
I have the same truck....with 87K miles. You should claim it under the emissions warranty as it lasts longer than the bumper to bumper. If i had thought of this....i would have done it too. My truck is now in for head gaskets and studs. I first did the EGR delete and added a scangauge , nice piece!! As far as temp deltas, without towing and with the hot temps outside and how hard i'm driving the truck....i would see 15 degrees difference. When towing i will be around 20 deg different. The fan and cooling system manages the 6 hr drive. The next day i 'd check the coolant level and i'd go through 1.5 gallons. some puked out....the balance was sucked into the motor. Without a load.....i wouldnt go through any!!...so, the moral of the story....the head gaskets have a slow failure....
