2006 F250 4wd 6.0 PS Diesel 24,000 miles: I pull a 26' boat total weight is around 8500#.. I run hard on the interstate at 75-80 mph. I recently had the temp gauge spike up to indicate overheating, display came on, I backed off and by the time I got to the right lane everything went back to normal. I could hear the cooling fan kicking in when this happens. I would travel another 20 miles and it would reoccur. I checked the overflow bottle and found no fluid at all. I purchased the Ford Liquid Gold anti-freeze ($18.00 per gallon) and with a 50/50 mixture refilled the bottle.
I took the truck in to the dealer and after three days they returned it: They claimed the EGR cooler was leaking, oil cooler stopped up, Fan clutch shorted internally, thermostat sticking.
They replaced the oil cooler, return filter, oil filter, EGR cooler, Fan Clutch & Thermostat per TSB 08-03-07 also tested and replaced EGR valve per TSB 07-21-09 (07??)
All covered under warranty. Since my boat is now at its destination I will not be pulling the load until the fall, so I don't know if this is a patch or a real cure. Time will tell.
Since the oil cooler was plugged I would strongly recommend you add a coolant filter. I got mine from site sponsor Dieselsite. It will prevent that from happening again. 2003-2007 6.0L Coolant Filtration System
BTW, keep an eye on the coolant level. If coolant is still disappearing then have them check the head gaskets.
You won't know for sure if the problem is fully fixed until you tow with it again but it does sound like they changed the correct parts. My egr cooler went out at 35k mi. but along with that went the headgaskets, and the turbo started sticking so that was changed also.
The egr cooler leaking is a common problem and all they can do is to replace it with another, but you still have just as much chance for the new one to crack and leak. An egr block-off is the only way to assure that problem is fixed but doing that can void your warranty.
Besides Dieselsite, you could check out the cooler kit from SPDiesel -- I came close to buying that one for $79 for our 6.0s -- then I decided to build my own because I like the base unit that the dieselsite or FleetFilter sell - one's aluminum just like dieselsite's and one is steel, just like the Napa unit (a more universal base for more options on the filters = potential savings on the filter side).
Plenty of evidence the coolant filters are really needed on our 6.0s, and likely the 6.4s too -- wish ford would have done them from the factory
BTW, I believe the International version of the 6.0 installed in their trucks has a coolant filter from the factory. These trucks should have also come with an EGT gauge!
Interesting info. Russ. Since you have the dieselsite filter, take a tour over at FleetFilter.com and check out the prices of the non-charged Wix (same as Napa gold) filters that fit your base unit....
