05 Oil Filter Assembly Help Needed

When I removed the oil filter from the filter housing today I noticed that the little black plastic mushroom shaped piece that sticks out the top of the oil filter output tube assembly (the telescoping assembly that fits up inside the center of the filter) had come loose from it's spring. Looks like part of it broke off of the bottom.

What does this thing do? Looks like a bypass valve to me but I'm just guessing.

Can I get a replacement?

Yes, you can get a replacement and yes it's the bypass valve but it's also very important. It's held in by 3 torx screws at the bottom. Loosen them, give it a little twist, and out it comes.

I have the same thing I noticed when I did a recent oil change. Now, today the truck surged a couple of times and now will not start. ICP reading on the scan gauge would only read 6 when cranking. Long story short, after some pressure checks through the ICP, I was getting air flow feeding through the oil filter assembly. Whether I energized the IPR or not it leaked. I ended up pulling the IPR to find debris on the valve and the valve stuck not moving at all with 12.5 volts to it. The debris in it I believe is the broken piece of plastic from the bypass valve at the top of the fiter tower.

So my question, Is it possible that the retaining tab on the "mushroom valve" that broke off was chewed up by the HPOP and clogged up and burnt out the IPR? That's my theory for now.

Doesn't one of the screws need to come all the way out (the one in the back) for the pipe to turn? Or is that only on the '03 trucks?

To answer Sean's question...I wouldn't say it's really common, but it does happen over the life of the truck. I'm willing to beat if you searched the forum you'd come up with at least a dozen threads where it has happened over the years. It's a piece of plastic bathed in hot oil...it's going to fail eventually.

I think you're right. I don't think anything internally is different on any of the year models in the oil filter area.

So very simple if it breaks and you change your
own oil then park it and get a replacement.
Then hope you get lucky and don't chew up parts
to plug the system.
