I replaced the left front hub a couple of years ago, all has been well, but now I have a vacuum leak. I have traced it to the left front.
I had a hub lock black o ring leaking a little grease down the out side of the wheel, so I replaced that seal. (Diesel Orings).
I am going to have to remove the hub to put the other seals in, so my question is, do I go ahead a replace the big axle seal while there?
Can the axle seal be pushed in too far? I think I read that the factory tool has a lip on it.
I used the LOWE'S built tool.
Both my front wheels had leaks at one time, it was the last couple of inches of tubing with cracks/tears. I cut off the last two inches and re-installed - all good. This may or may not be your issue.
Thanks Tugly. I had read your thread and had tried that in my testing. I have cut off a little on both hoses, plugged each side one at a time.
It only happens when 4x4 switch is used, and the pump immediately starts and runs for 2 minutes.
Plugged the left hose, and now I can cycle the switch 2 times before the pump starts and it only runs for about 30 seconds. Hey you are up early.
It's a curse (or blessing). I wake up between 3:00 and 3:30 and the alarm is set for 4:00. I miss out on the evening posts here and I don't get to see fireworks on the 4th because I go to bed so early. Quite the party animal, eh?
About the vacuum, I haven't had issues with the hubs (yet) - but I did notice how clean they are (on mine). I don't yet know how to lube them, but I know a heavy grease will not let them work because vaccum is not a big enough force to override the friction. I know many have gone to the Warn hubs, but I really like the ESOF feature - so that wouldn't be for me. Have you tried a temorary cap of some sort with the hub removed? I don't know if a PVC plumbing fixture will fit over the hub seal, or if something else would work - but it would be an interesting test.
One thing I tried when I found the leak to the outside, was to remove the Hub cover, and cleaned the seal seat on the hub and the cover. I applied a light coat of grease on the seal, and it helped a lot.
This was why I ordered some seals from Bob @ Diesel O rings.
I have been retired now for 12 years and I still wake up at 5:O'clock each morning.
Well: I have been doing some checking this A.M. before it gets too hot, and I may have found the cause of my seal failure.
Pulled the Hub Cover and then the washers, and there is no snap ring on the axle.
I may have failed to install it, when I installed the hub and or ball joints. I am guessing that the shaft can move around a lot more and has ruined the seal.
I would hate to have to admit to a mistake!!!!! I am a pack rat, so I thought I would have saved it, but it is not in my truck junk.
Leaving shortly to stealership for new seals and snap ring.
Might wait a couple of days until it gets out of the 90's and 100's before I pull everything, but I'll be ready
Thanks Tugly, Yes, I had given that some thought, and I may run down the road 30 miles to another dealer. I might just call the ford dealer that's on here, and have them mail one to me.
I do not have much of a supply here, like Fastenal etc. Small Eastern Ky College town.
I found 1 in my junk box, and it will fit without the washers in. It goes into the slot and will rotate fairly easily.
When I put the washers back in, it doesn't want to go back far enough to snap in. Pushed axle out with OAK block driven in between axle housing and U Joint.
Started getting hot again, so it is off to Fastenal shortly. Thanks Jim
New seals installed today, I haven't really checked to see if I have completely cured my problem. It seems to be still using too much vacuum per cycle.
I'll be checking farther tomorrow.
After checking farther, I found the left front which I had just resealed was still leaking.
Started searching on FET for help.
Reread Guzzles hub rebuild, and it hit me that I had not used white grease on the hub seal.
Got some white grease and that seemed to have stopped the leak, at least for now. I then pulled the right side and did the same. I will post again if anything goes awry. Jim
