Engine temps

Why do today's vehicles burn so hot? 230 F+ degrees is normal. What's the whole concept behind this? I thought temps put stress on metals which isn't good in the long run for the structural soundness of that particular element.

Why not run at 130 degrees F?

Emission requirements.

Hot = burns a greater percentage of the fuel volume.

If you ran an engine at 135* you'd get garbage gas mileage and be down on power. The hotter the temp the more complete the burn, to an extent. We are finally back up to the power levels of the 60's, but with 2 to 3x the gas mileage for a reason, and that's with emissions equipment!
