how unreasonable does this sound. I plan on doing an 89 5.8 build for my truck within the next few weeks... now my original plans were picking up a low mile 5.8 (under 100xxx) and leaving the bottom end together, i have already bought world windsor jr heads, 1.6RR, crane 444232, TC, waterpump oil pump and throwin it in in replace of my old 351w.
However, i have always been real interessted in a 393 windsor... but as you can see from my old build plans im on the budget side. Could i theoretically make a 393w run with speed density. Heres a thought i keep mulling over in my head... i currently have a complete 5.8l motor that is dissessembled sitting in my garage, i am contemplating ridge reeming and trying to smooth out the cylinders (would probably need a hone even though i am against spending the money but i probably would end up having the cylinders honed) I would then get 302 dish pistons, reuse my stock rods, get a cast 3.850 crank, then follow my same plans of waterpump, tc, oil pump, world jr heads, crane 444232, possibly 460 injectors? stock upper and lower intake for now, 28oz imbalance and trying to start it up. Now keeping in mind i have deleted the EGR, carbon can, o2, and possibly others by the previous owner. And yes, this would be with the stock upper and lower intake until i have the money to get the edelbrock truck or typhoon with a different TB.
Does this motor sound runnable? how much horsepower could i expect? are there anyways to upgrade my fuel injection without swapping to carb/MAF, larger injectors (460) can be run, same pulse width as stock injectors except under WOT correct? this is about a 13-1700 dollar motor build not counting the cost of the block. And also just relized it would not be a 393, rather a 388? or so since it wouldnt be bored out if at all possible. (my local machine shops like to charge alot up here in CT)
Thanks for your time, ive been thinking alot lately about how i could squeeze a few more cubes into the motor for cheap, im just 17 so dont ream me how rediculous it is to put a 393 on SD. It is my daily driver and i also take it wheelin regularly and do like to take it in the mud and mud bogs when i can find one.

That won't run on the stock SD EFI computer.. sorry. Spend the $$ rebuilding the bottom end correctly.. bore, oversize pistons and rings, resized stock rods, all new bearings, and with that cam and heads you'll have BIG power gains over stock and it'll be 100000mi reliable... something you can add to later. This would be my advice regardless if you keep EFI or go to a carb setup.
thanks, i would like to go to carb but thats another 1000 the way i look at it. Maybe a later addition. How do you think i would be looking power wize leaving a stock 5.8 bottum end in tact using a crane 444232 world windsor jr heads, 1.6rr on the stock intake and stock efi? a worthy enough increase? and can i use 460 injectors/would that be a good idea with the World heads and cam?
That's a 300hp/400tq motor(+ - 10%) with longtubes so yeah it's worth it and yes that will run on the truck EFI system, but no you can't use 460 injectors. If the motor needs a little more fuel on the topend add an adjustable FPR and raise the base fuel pressure a little, and use a wideband O2 like the Innovate LC-1 to monitor those A/F ratios and dial it in.
one more question, i had seen in another thread that you had said "For regular pump gas 60-62cc will be best..stock heads have 64cc chambers, and you won't be able to use anything bigger than a 1.90" valve with the stock pistons... cam dependant of course to avoid piston-valve interference. "
Are my world windsor Jr's safe to run on stock pistons? there 1.94 intake with 58cc chambers
Yeah they should be safe, chambers on the stock heads are often closer to 62cc so 58cc chambers wont raise CR too much, and with a rebuild you have the chance to select pistons with valve eyebrows and then you won't have to worry about piston-valve clearance issues.
