I need some opinions from those that have some knowledge in converting a carbed 466 to fuel injection. Truck I have is an 89 f250 4x4, 351w, ZF5speed, D60 SAS w/shackle reversal and superduty front springs. Still sitting on 37” military knockoff’s till I get my drivetrain built for my 42” TSL’s. Currently working on a 203/205 doubler and Hydro assist. Been thinking about the motor a lot here lately. I have all the parts for a mild iron headed 466 sitting in the garage. Just never assembled it. Problem is that it is a carbed motor and the truck I have is fuel injected. Wouldn’t be a hard decision if I didn’t have to worry with emissions to keep it street able. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o> With either motor a MAF conversion is definite. But after that it gets sketchy. Should I sell the 466 and use the money to build up a stroked 351w. Or would I be better off converting my 466 to a MAF system. I’ve done a lot of research on the conversion and there doesn’t seem to be a lot of options. For a stock 460 things would get a little simpler. What are your thoughts and opinions here. Some of you seem rather knowledgeable with 460’s so maybe you know something’s I don’t. Thanks<o></o>
I think you'd be much happier with the 460. I don't know if the aftermarket fuel injection setups are street legal, with the stand alone computers and what not, but I think even a stock computer can be remapped to use with a "mild" 460. Even a stock EFI 460 would make you happier than a wheezy, I would think. Either way you're going to spend some money getting the EFI setup right.
Just a thought, is propane conversion something that is allowed in your area? All the characteristics of EFI and good for 400-500hp depending on the setup, can be done for under 1000, depending on the setup.
It depends on what all is done to your 466 and which heads it has. If it was built with a set of later fulie heads (E7te), then the EFI intake and the rest of the stuff will bolt on. Then after you do a ECM swap and get all the wiring sorted out, you will need to get it all tuned to work properly (read as take it somewhere and have them dyno tune and make you new fuel/ignition maps!). If it was built with D3ve or older heads, I don't there there are many options to go efi, except for Edelbrock's universal EFI intake. Then you'd have to go their full aftermarket deal and still get it tuned.
The stroked weezy will be less costly since you won't need to change everything, but will still need to get a custom chip worked up for your motor.
I have no doubt I would be happier with the 466 but dont know if it will be practical. There are two different aftermarket systems that I know of for the 460 but are pricey. Can't remember the names of them right now though. The heads I have are ported D3's, block is a D1VE bored, KB pistons, cam ground from Scott at Reincarnation, Weiand stealth intake, holley 750, L&L longtubes, still in pieces. I thought I read somewhere that someone was working on an intake for just this but can't find much info. Might be Edelbrock.
I know a custom tune will be in store whichever way I go. Thinking of looking into Moates quarterhorse or something along those lines.
save your money and throw it into the 351. there is no cheap way to have an efi 460, unless it's already between the frame rails. and even then, they are hard to keep emmissions legal. oh, and you have a zf, so add new tranny to the list of costs for a 466 swap. gets pricey quick.
Eldelbrock does have a "universal efi" intake for the 460 with injector bosses cast in. You'll just need to use their throttle body, injectors and ecm parts to make it all work.
Looked into that edelbrock system and thats a little more than I want to spend for this. Quick search didn't find one for the 460 but what I did find was 3,000+. Tranny isn't a big deal as I have a C-6 sitting on the floor. However it is starting to look like the windsor is going to stay.
Smart decision for money involved. The 466 would make more power, but as you already know, will be a pain in the **** to change everything over and make up an efi setup. If you could go carb, then it would be much simpler.
If you have to go fuellie, get yourself some F3 heads and the stock fuellie intake, you'll limit yourself on power potential with the stock fuel injection system, but it's the cheapest and easiest way to do it.
MAF would be fun, pretty much have to do it with a 5.0HO computer setup if you want to run a Ford setup... I'd be looking at a megasquirt setup or something along those lines.
The 460 is going to kick the pants off of a smallblock unless when you talk stroker you are talking a $$$ 400+ cube stroker build.
Can I safely assume this is a dual purpose rig than?
If so, go ahead with a stroked 351W, I *think* if u found a 96 you would have all the wires/computer to switch it to a MAF motor, than its mat all that hard(so I'm told) to tune the computer witha Tweecer(sp?) Setup.
Yes, it has become a dual purpose rig. Wound up having to sell my 79 project to be able to fund this truck. Plus I was tired of sieng it sit in the garage untouched. Kept my 460, C-6, 205, and all my rod ends & DOM. I actually just bookmarked a bunch of pages on the megasquirt setup to read.
A 300 in a truck on 42's would be dual purpose, it would power the truck somewhat, and **** you off that you had no wheel speed because you had to gear the hell out of it to turn the tires... LOL
