Adjust valves

OK,
I have a slightly stupid question, but it still need answered.
How do you adjust the rockers on a 302 after you install a new cam, lifeters and pushrods?

Depends on if you have solid or hydraulic lifters and if the rockers are adjustable. I'll assume hydraulic and adjustable. You need to get the lifter on the base circle of the cam then just take out the slack and give it a half turn more. you can check the slack by rotating the pushrod with your fingers as you tighten the adjusting nut. You'll feel a little resistance as the plunger in the lifter starts to collapse. There's a method in the manual that has you place the crank in certain positions and adjust certain valves but the method I use is to start at #1 cylinder, bump the engine over while watching the valves. When the exhaust just starts to move, set the intake. Then bump it over until the intake opens completely and just closes, set the exhaust. Just continue down the line and jump to the other side. That way I know I didn't miss any.
Of course, if you have pedestal rocker pivots or studs with the bevel seat the valves aren't adjustable other than by swapping pushrods. You just tighten them down to the torque spec and go.
Hope this helps.

So all you can do is check for pre-load. Quick and dirty...after tightening the rockers down, (go easy, not too fast and just to the torque spec) if you don't have the lifters pumped full of oil you should be able to push on the pushrod end of the rocker and get it to move, giving you some slack at the valve. If the lifter is full of oil, it will take some fair amount of steady pressure to do this but you should still get some slack. About .050" I think.
