adjusting points

how do you adjust points after an install?

With a Dwell Meter or a Scope and a screw driver, set them to 30 deg. for an 8 and 60 deg. for a 6.

Feeler gauge will get you in trouble, don't ask how I know. I have also used a test light when I did not have anything else, just put the point on the wire to the coil and move them until it flashes.

That's one thing GM got right that Ford didn't. Gm has a little window in their dist caps so you can adjust the dwell while the engine's running. With Fords you have to keep stopping the engine and taking the cap off to adjust it.
