9" diff rebuild kit needed

My daughter's project truck has a 9" rear diff that is out. It has 3:50 gears and we are looking for a reliable source for the rebuild kit. This will be our first rebuild. I know some will say we are crazy for attempting it but my 15 yo daughter is adamant that she rebuild everything herself to both save $ but also so she knows how for future. I am an engineer with several engine rebuilds in my past as well with ability to disassemble and reassemble with ease.

Any suggestions for rebuild kit source and brand would be greatly appreciated.

Ken

Jeff's Bronco Graveyard would be a good start.

For bearings and seals I would just use NAPA or whatever your favorite parts store is. They will have CHINA quality up to USA made.

Just need:

Carrier bearings w/ races
Pinion support bearing
Inner/outer pinion bearings with races
Pinion retainer o-ring
Pinion seal
Carrier gasket or rtv
Copper washers

I have checked local sources but was wanting some recommendations as there are several manufacturers and price differences and wanted to know if the higher price is worth it or not. In most cases you get what you pay for but this isn't always true with some parts.

Thanks for the responses!

KenEdwards.
A few thoughts...
Summit racing has kits for the Ford 9inch. You'll need to know all the sizes of bearing and whatnot.

If you are making a powerful engine, aftermarket axles are cheaper than you'd think from Moser. Might as well do it now while you are rebuilding the rear. Also a good time to upgrade to a Trac-loc differential if you are so inclined.

Ken at BadShoe productions (google it) has videos out that are very helpful if you are unsure about rebuilding the 9inch. He also has trans and engine videos. Books are great, but watching someone do it step by step makes it pretty foolproof. Also helpful is him showing handmade tools to do certain things, pays for itself, ya know?

Good luck! and have fun building the truck with your daughter.

if youre rebuilding the rear anyway and you end up getting new axles you might as well step up to 35 spline, they are a lot stronger.

I'd second the vote for summit, their prices are usually the best and they have very good customer support.

I will look into summit, we are hesitant to go too far as she has a limited budget and wants to finish the truck in the near future. If we upgrade too much it will take longer for her to raise the $. We will look into all the options as we go. I appreciate the info, FTE is the best source of info hands down!!!

I am surprised that you are the first to notice. It is a glitch that the mods are trying to figure out via another thread. It is accurate in my profile but not on my posts and I cant upload pix, go figure? They will figure it out soon and get it fixed!

Also need the pinion crush sleeve and I'd also replace the pinion nut too.
On the crush sleeve, NAPA sells them two to the pack, wouldn't hurt to have two just in case you go too far the first time.

Here is the link to Bad Shoe Productions... It's definitely worth the $50 you'll spend to get it...

I agree I forgot to list those items, but I suppose that applies if you wanted to do it "by the book"

Most just loc-tite the nut and many rebuilders set preload without a crush sleeve or use a solid spacer.

I've seen the spacer kits to do away with the crush sleeve. Can't remember where. Crush sleeves seem like the trickiest part to rebuilding the pinion so if I end up doing my own I'll probably go that route.
