I've seen the spacer kits to do away with the crush sleeve. Can't remember where. Crush sleeves seem like the trickiest part to rebuilding the pinion so if I end up doing my own I'll probably go that route.
Nothing a 1/2" impact gun can't take care of. Zip the nut on and hammer a little. Check pre-load. Hammer... check pre-load. Repeat until desired pre-load is achieved. Go too far and a new sleeve is needed.
That's why rebuilders say screw that and leave the crush sleeve out altogether. Just tighten the nut until you achieve proper pre-load. Peen the nut. Nothing is going anywhere.
For a solid spacer you use a crush sleeve, set-preload, remove the sleeve and make a solid spacer that matches the thickness of the crushed-sleeve.
All 3 methods do not take a rocket science degree.
