hey everyone this is my first post on this site. I have started working on a 1962 ford f100 that i inherited from my grandfather and i changed the brake drums and shoes today. after putting the shoes, drums, and wheels back on the clutch wont fully take the pickup out of gear so it will still drive forward even with the clutch put all the way in. i cant figure out why it does this and was hoping for some advice?
If you know that the clutch disk isn't stuck to the flywheel, you will need to adjust the clutch petal play. Adjust it so that you have 1 to 2 inches of free play in the petal before you feel it contact the pressure plate fingers.
The threaded clutch adjustment rod attaches to a stud on the equalizer bar using two steel wave washers and a hairpin clip.
This rod has two nuts, the nut that contacts the clutch fork is a FoMoCo part only, has a rounded head (351062-S8), behind this is a plain 'ol nut.
It is very important that this rounded nut is present (160 available NOS), otherwise the end of the rod will chew a hole in the clutch fork.
Loosen both nuts to adjust the clutch, then tighten them up. Double nutted assures the adjustment doesn't change.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Note very important: Between the clutch pedal bellcrank under the dash and the equalizer bar is the 17 3/4" long clutch release rod (C1TZ-7521-B).
This rod has two 90 degree ends with a nylon bushing (COAZ-7526-B) on each end (reproduced, available from Carpenter and etc).
What happens to it: The nylon bushings crack apart/disintigrate, the 90 degree ends begin to crack, eventually snap off! Not pleasant and now you aren't going anywhere!
Check these bushing, replace if showing one tiny crack. If the bushings have vanished and the rod ends have cracked, replace the rod (ONE available NOS) or have it welded.
Changing the brake drums does not affect the clutch unless when you jack the truck and raise the frame causes crushing of a weak or non existent insulator or as is common rust out of the steel on top of the insulator. This happens even in dry areas.
It does not un-adjust itself. There is an underlying reason and the number one reason of the clutch suddenly binding is a bad cab mount.
