I can't remember where I read it but there is some valve or redirect by the oil cooler that had failed on a guys truck causing the majority of the oil not to go to the cooler but to be directed to the pan when it defected. Can't remember where I read it. He had habitual high oil temps.
I'm starting to worry now that I read this thread. I hit 265 pulling a pass over the 4th, 26000 LBS. gross. Going to the dealer in the morning for a oil change and B.S. about the oil temps. unloaded nomal temps are in the low 200's.
Pulling my 12K 5th wheel up to the Tetons and Yellowstone last week, mine got as high as 240 for a while. Once I leveled out it cooled to the 220s quickly.
The oil cooler is fed from the Primary or hot radiator which has 2 thermostats one opens at 194 and the other at 201. Its always going to be around 200 unloaded, Painted hits the nail on the head with the concept that when she starts working a lot of the heat is carried away in the oil from the cooling jets for the pistons. I've seen mine nudge 240 in the Sierras and like everyone else it drops quickly.
I've never felt that my truck rolled back to protect itself, hope I never do.
I had to have the four thermostats replaced on my 6.7 as I had a display on the LCD of check engine. When taken to the dealership I was told I had a thermostat problem but they weren't sure which one it was so they replaced all four. I believe they come in packs of 2 meaning there is one set of 2 thermostats and then the other set has 2 thermostats as well. He showed me the thermostats. It was under warranty at the time so no cost to me. Otherwise, I believe my bill would have been over $400.00. Maybe you have a thermostat problem like I did?
