High Oil Temps

Okay an update from my dealer today in regards to my oil temps, I spoke with one of the diesel techs and I asked him what the "normal" operating temp should be for my oil temp (i asked him for an answer before I told him what my temps have been getting up to, that way he couldn't say "oh that's normal". But enough of my conspiracy issues), he told me that the normal range should be 195 to 199 unloaded at highway speeds and around 207 with a load. I told him that mine got to 219 just on the 6 mile drive to his shop and he said, "Ya, you definately have an issue and if I had to guess I would say that it was due to a faulty EGR sensor, it will be the third one in here in 4 months". Didn't like to hear that I have a problem but at least I'm hopeful in that he knew of the issue.

I will let you know what I find out on Thursday.

Anyway, just wanted to share that info with you all and I hope that you have a great Independece Day!!!!!!

Best Wishes,

Randy

3 in 4 months doesnt sound too bad to me???

i guess it depends on the size of the dealer, city, and how many trucks are around there.

Mine runs between 198-204° on the interstate unloaded (outside temp 80°+)
It's been that way since brand new and hasn't changed since the truck was tuned.

I have a hard time seeing oil temps of 207° loaded on the interstate, unless it was cold outside.

It was 106F Saturday and 101F today.
I stay below 201 EOT at highway speeds empty in those temps.
Mostly 197-199.

I put a call into my shop today. Just had oil and filters changed along with nox recall done. Truck always ran at 198-200 yesterday driving on highway went up to 219. Will see what they say. He is supose to call me back tomorrow or Thursday due to the holiday. I am leaving for a 1100 mike trip with trailer in tow at end of the month. Want to make certain it is a stress free trip.

I've seen 248 degree oil temps while pulling my 5er uphill WOT. I don't let it stay there long tho. I change my oil around the 3500-5000 mile mark during the summer.

Think I will talk to my dealer about the EGR sensor thingy. Thanks for the feedback.

Ron,
I hit 244° going up Monarch Pass this year, as soon as I got to the top and ran the SEIC I was back to 200° in a few minutes.

Yeah, I spend a lot time in the hills. A lot of time is spent in 4th and 5th gear WOT. It doesn't take long for the oil temp to rise. I sometimes wish I had the 4:10 gears instead of the 3:73's. It would be a better pulling machine. I just think it would stay in the power band a little better than it does now, with a lot lower rpm's.

Considering I'm weighing over 26,000 gross, I can't complain.

Back when the 6.7L first came out, We had a Ford engineer come on and discuss various aspect of the engine on one of the Ford Pickup forums. We asked about the high oil temps. I often hit 242°-243° when towing up grades.

We were told that was normal for this engine. The 6.7L engine shoots a jet of oil thru a chanel on the underside of the piston to help cool the engine and that the engineers expected to see Oil temps that high. And that the oil spec'd for this engine should be able to handle those temps.

My oil temps stay about 10° warmer than my engine coolant temps except when I pull a grade and they come back down pretty quick as soon as the boost lets off. Considering that with this weeks 98-100° air temps, my ECT is staying around 200° with normal city driving, 210 is not out of line for oil temps.

Thanks for the info PH.

I am currently using Motorcraft 10/30 dino oil but am wondering if I should be using a syn oil during the hot summer months when I do the majority of my heavy pulling. I don't get too concerned about the high oil temp. As fast as it builds, it comes down just as quickly when I back out of the throttle or crest out.

maybe that is the reason why these engines seem to cut power at highway speeds, if they didn't the oil temp would go off the map

Got a call back from my diesel tech today. Said it seems a bit high (220 unloaded going about 60) they logged in with ford with my vin. I got a call within 30 minutes. They asked how long it was at 220 (about 1 min) then said it is most likely due to throttle position and a slight grade in the road. I would agree that I was heading up a 1-2% grade at the time. It is logged so if there is a future problem according to them it would be repaired without question. I know there have been a few people not happy with ford but this was a good experience all around for me. I am curious to see how she pulls on my trip this month in the high 110 degree temps with 11-12k in tow. Not really too worried as she has never giving me any real reason to worry! Will give report next month when we return from our trip. Hope everyone else has a great summer and enjoys their trucks as much as I do.
