anybody know what this is? You can see one of the little caps is missing from the top of the spring post. Must have been lost while cleaning and we haven't been able to find it anywhere.

How about another pic, a bit further away. It's not uncommon for the valves to have a different type retainer for the intake and exhaust. Exhaust valves frequently have a retained designed to promote rotation of the valve, to help cut down on "hot spots" that can lead to a burned valve.
