I'm almost embarrassed to ask this question but... what is the best way to check the transmission fluid level on a 2000 F250 5.4L auto tran.
I take it out for about a 10 mile drive to warm things up. The truck is running and level when I check the fluid level. It seems like I can check the fluid level five different times in one sitting and get five different readings. Sometimes the side with the cross hatches appears to have no oil on it but the other side has oil up to the top of the cross hatches. I'm kind of obsessing about this because I want to have the proper amount of tran fluid in there before I start towing this summer. I have had other automatics and have never had much of a problem with checking the level.
When the truck is cold is there a level the fluid should be at? At least that would give some piece of mind.
Thanks for the info. I guess I need to add some - on one side it barely covers the rounded end. On the other side the fluid is present about an inch from the bottom of the stick.
