Lifter tapping?

Lifter tapping?
I'm looking at an 03 150 with a 4.6.. it sounds to me like a lifter tapping on the bottom side in the left bank, I've had a mechanic tell me that its not a lifter but something in the transmission. I haven't felt any slipping or loss of power. is it plausible to be the transmission? Is there a way to know without tearing it apart?
