Hi I have a 1997 F150 4.6 L. Over the past three summers when it gets to be about 85 or hotter my truck will not start after 5 min of driving or just on random occasions. I can let it sit for 15 min and it will start but other times it will take 2 hours to start. I have just started to learn if I move the key back and forth a few times it will start. I have read it could be a number of things, but it has 124000 miles. I do not know if the FULE PUMP has ever been changed or not could this be the problem or is it something different like a clogged fule filter. Any suggestions that you have would be a great big help.
I have a 2000 F150 4x2 4.6L and I am having the same issue, it just started this summer. I don't know what the issue is either. I have swapped out the relays and no help. If I find out what the issue is I will let you know, would appreciate it if you could do the same. Here's hoping we fidn out what i the issue!
Just out of curiosity when was the starter last changed on this 15 year old truck? You never mentioned whether it cranks but won't start, just clicks when the key is turned or just nothing when the key is turned.
All right here is what I found with my truck. The starter relay that is located on the firewall on the passenger side was bad. I replaced it and it starts everytime for now.
sympoms I had:
-Starts in the morning to get to work temp between 65-70deg F
-would not start if i tried to start it after I shut it down after 10
min up to 2 hours.
-Battery is good, Alt. is good, all fuses good.
- When it would not start I could hear the relays located by the
fuses under the console on drivers side. this told me that the
ignition switch was good and closing all relays need to start
engine.
- To test this I put the key to run and jumped the starter relay and
the truck started and ran.
- the relay was $20.00 fairly cheap part to change out, if it is not
problem AZ will take it back if it is not damaged when you
installed it or removed it.
