Fuel filters

Thought I would be smart and save some cash by replace the fuel filters on my '06 f250 power stroke. Ran into trouble trying to remove filter housing cover. Not much room on the main for a wrench so I found a 36mm socket that fit but still could not budge it. Still not much room for leverage but I was afraid I might strip the head since it is plastic. Gave up and went to the secondary filter. Plenty of room but again it would not budge. Again I gave up and took it to the local mechanic where it is now.
Question, is this normal and I gave up to soon or is there a better way?

36mm, 6 point is what you want for the rail filter. It has to come off so if you need a cheater bar, so be it. They only need about 7 to 9 lbs. of torque going on. The O ring does the sealing not the threads.

69CJ is right,
Get your self one of these
Ford F250 250 F350 350 Diesel 6.0L Oil Fuel Filter Wrench Socket 36mm Turbo Tool | eBay
You can also find some in your local tool store made by
Lisle Corporation
Also the filter on the engine is 24MM and you don't want to
use the 1/2" square they tend to break the caps.
So what you need is one each 24 MM & 36 MM 6 point sockets
What ever you DO NOT use a 12 point socket
Down on the frame rail you can add a long extension and
work from a bit farther back so you have more room. Mine was a bit stubborn
when I removed it. When you put things back together put some
new engine oil on the O-ring and maker sure that the seal surface
is clean of grime that way it goes back in easy.

Just ask if you have any problems.

Fuel filter

While I was trying to figure out how to attack the fix, I noticed the outboard rail filter electrical connector was loose, disconnected. So I reconnected. On a short run I got a water in fuel message which I had not had in a long time. I slid under and bled about a pint of fuel and I couldn't see any water in the fuel. I assumed the connector was the WIF indicator, is that correct?
Not wanting to screw up the filter housing I took it to a mechanic.
After picking it up and on the was home I again got a WIF signal which I am suspicious of since the filters were just changed. What you think?
Thanks for the info on the wrenches.

The wif sensors are known for corrosion and in some cases false signals. Also make sure the mechanic used OEM filters and caps only. No aftermarket filters or caps on this engine.

Try these sockets.

Found this on ebay motors at:
FORD oil-filter wrench 36mm & 24mm fuel wrench combo | eBay
FORD oil-filter wrench 36mm & 24mm fuel wrench combo | eBay
Had my buddy TIG weld them back to back. That's after I checked they would fit my 06 F350, 4X4, all 3 filters with no clearance problems. Goes back into my glovebox when I'm done changing filter. $18.09 delivered. Just thought I would share. Aluminum 3/8" drive or 3/4" wrench flats. Only 1" tall each.
