When my tank is getting kind of low. Well low being 1/4 tank . It seems like it getting lots of air in the fuel supply. One time i started it up and the idle is all over the place, and sometimes it will surge. Other time i started it and it ran for 10 seconds and just died like i ran it out of fuel. My guess is my fuel pump is on the way out and is having a hard time with the air in the fuel at lower tank levels. I fill it up and i never have any problems so i'm not expecting air intrusion issues.
Whats your guys thoughts?
Can i test fuel pressure by sticking a gauge on the Schrader valve. I have a fuel pressure gauge here for my gasser(never used on it) with tons of adapters.
Yep, all these trucks have that problem- remove bed to fix tanks, there are a few posts on here concerning the pick-up tubes and how to fix-
if you can't remove bed make sure you fix back tank first, then front or front tank will block access to selector valve when attempting to put new lines on...
also best to clean tanks while your at it...mine had all kinds of trash in them.
Why in the world do people say its easier to remove the bed to fix the tanks, It just kills me!It take 5 minutes to wiggle the tank out from above the frame The bed weighs several hundred pounds and for a novice mechanic it just plan dangerous! And there is straps above the tank that dont come out they still have to be unbolted from below...
But any way...
Mine will do it every now and then and I fixed the pickup shower head with a piece of rubber fuel line some may be the check valve isnt sealing all the time, It sits about the same height as the heads top,I'm going to replace them when ever I get around to putting in my second tank.

Thanks. Ya i don't really understand the whole removing the bed is easier thing either.
have you ever tried dropping a full tank? or one that is half full when you have nothing to put the fuel in?
it takes 15 minutes to pull the bed, and the sending unit is rite there. no straps or rusty skid plate bolts to mess with.
I wish I could get mine off that easy, hasn't been off since 86, and the bolts are well rusted. The skid plate bolts aren't that big a deal. Main downside of dropping the tanks is that the vent hose doesn't go back into the right spot in the tank very well... Since the truck isn't dead, the tanks can be run down farther. I have dropped them with plenty of fuel, as I have to do that kind of thing a lot on cars, it really isn't too bad coming down, it is going up that is hard if you are silly enough to not drain them first.

If you live in the rust belt the only way your getting the bed off in 15 minutes if your using a torch.
Best easiest way to do it is cut a hole in the bed over the tank inserts. Make it nice and square so that you can either A weld it back in, B screw it in, or C throw a hinge on it seldom used maybe, but the fastest easiest way no matter where you live, rust or no.

I did it twice with my truck. It ain't no biggie. Just cut two boards that fit under the bed rail and just lifted it up with a forklift mounted on a farm tractor. Easy as pie. Also, it ain't hard to drop the tank. We did that with my brother's truck, however, we made the mistake of trying to drop it when it was about 1/4 full. Was a bear to move. We used a pallet with the tractor mounted forklift to put it back up. Worked much better. When my truck got right at the empty mark it would start knockin and missin and coughin like crazy. Not very good for the injection system. I did look in my tank when my bed was off and my pickup foot is gone too. I'll just keep a spare can of fuel and additive in my truck. I can use off road diesel on my truck.
