360/390 share the same block, the bore is the same (4.05"), the stroke is different: 360 (3.50") / 390 (3.78").

390's use a different crankshaft, rods, pistons and rings than a 360.

The 428 (non CJ, S/CJ) uses the same harmonic balancer as 1968/71 Galaxie/LTD 390, 1968/76 F100/350 360/390. But...the flywheel is specific to 428, flexplate to 410/428.

If you use the 352/360 or 390 flywheel (352/360: 11" clutch / 390: 11 1/2" clutch) or flexplate (same 1965/76 FX/MX C-O-M/C6) you'll have a vibration that will eventually tear the center from the flywheel/flexplate.

428 flywheel (C6AZ-6375-A) or 410/428 flexplate (C6AZ-6375-B) can be difficult to find, expensive when found.

410 = 1966/67 Mercury Parklane only, all came w/C6's.

C6AZ-6375-A .. 428 (non CJ, S/CJ) flywheel marked C6AE-6380-B uses a 11 1/2" clutch on a 12 7/8" bolt circle.

C6AZ-6375-B .. 410/428 flexplate marked C6VP-6380-B or C7AP-6375-A / 15 7/8" diameter / (4) 7/16" attaching holes on a 12" bolt circle.

Excellent example. The 1.66 compression height is what you want for a 410.

Here's an idea: just stroke it to a 390 and skip the added cost of going to a 428 crank. You will NOT miss the few ft/lbs the .2 inch stroke difference gives you. 390's were never given the bad rep the 360's got and were never slouches in the pulling/accelleration dept. The Chebby 383 was a direct result of the bowtie (SBC) crowd getting their asses handed to them by that lowly Ford "pickup truck" motor. If you're going to stroke it with an aftermarket crank, go for the gold and build a 445.

I don't want to pay $2500 for a stroker kit..I'm fine with taking bronze or silver...a warmed up 390 does sound nice tho

I've owned several 390's and never felt the need to stroke any of them. Had a GT390 in a 70 F100 and it would pull anything you hooked to the bumper. Building a 410 is nice, but unless I already had the crank in hand, I'd do a 390.

What is the volume of the top of the piston? What would the deck height be on a 410?

Engine tech does not give that info, other than to say they are "dished". Silv-O-Lite also says dished but gives info on the dish:

Silv-O-Lite - Better Pistons Since 1922

Even better dimensions from FM via Summit:

Sealed Power Z381NP - Sealed Power Cast Pistons - Overview - SummitRacing.com

Figure the combustion chamber volume, head gasket dimensions and that info plus a little math and OP will have his CR. Original 410s were 10.5, but I do not know if they had a flat top or the dish. All these pistons are sold as 390 pickup pistons, without mention of the 410 from what I saw. A 2 year engine fogotten by all but the Ford fanatics, vs. the millions served over almost as many years of the truck 390.

428 crank

Yo, I picked up the 428 crank with flywheel today I just couldn't help myself haha I got to see the truck the old man was working on before he passed away. It's a 72 highboy with a 428cj! the front end was on hinges and a hydrologic pump pushed the hood and fenders up! I was impressed.. Humble family she also gave me the chilton to my truck
Thanks for stopping by 85Tod I heard 410 pistons had a 1/8th shorter piston compared to a 390 piston..that's what gave it a 10.5 is this true? thanks for googling the pistons, I seen the same pistons today.. only 7 of them tho and stamped 030... should I get them?

The 410 used a shorter compression height to compensate for the longer stroke using the same rod as the 390. That, and all the other factors, made the CR what it was. If you put 390 pistons in a 410, they will hit the heads.
