Bed Extender

for those that have the OEM accessory that Ford sells, do you find it useful? - does it bolt right in or do you need to drill to get it in? - in particular, how does it function when flipped inward to create storage compartments in the bed?

thanks!

P.S. - the accessory is described at page 124 of the Owners Guide (4th printing)

I have them in my 08 from the factory so I cant comment on the installation process but they are great. I will order them in the next truck for sure. The Extang Trifecta Trifold tonneau cover rear handles compete with the extenders somewhat but it works well once your use to it. I also have the "lift gate" tail gate option love it! Strongly recommend both!!!

Mine also came from the factory with the bed extender, so I can't tell you about installing them either. But I have used them a couple of times already. Since I sacrificed that 18 inches or so on the longbed I had, it has come in handy for hauling those long boards.

Now on the down side, I drilled the hole for my in-bed trailer light connector a bit too low, and that dang extender really gets in the way. I need to move that up in the bed, and figure out what to do with the big hole from the old one.

But other than that, I'm glad they came with the truck.

Product Review:

the part arrives in a box about the size of a suitcase - neatly packed with adequate cushioning material

installation is a breeze - it installs to the posts that the tailgate closes against (the one that has 3 holes in it)

the extender gate is made of a polycarbon plastic reinforced with metal at connection and fitting points

there is one screw that mounts the gate to the cab side - it is the middle hole - there is a pin that fits into either the top hole or the bottom hole depending on whether you have the gate flipped in to use as a divider inside the bed (my intended use) or flipped outboard for a long object that extends past the tailgate

all in all it is pretty nifty, goes in easy and looks like it will be useful for creating a smaller space in the bed to contain items - it will set you back about 400 dollars

thanks

Sorry I didn't see this until now or I could have told you about the installation. I got mine for Christmas this past year and it was a super easy install. It's really handy. I use it very often flipped inside the bed to keep stuff from rolling around in the bed. It's good to keep more fragile cargo separate from less fragile.
