I am wondering how to know when my clutch is adjusted properly? If you look at the manuals they give you a measurment from the steering wheel for the amount of free play the pedal should have. However, a mechanic told me to not go by that since the truck is old and parts are worn. So right now I have probably almost three inches of free play before the pedal is firm and then the truck easily shifts at about half way to the floor. So I rarely push the pedal all the way to the floor. Tonight I was going in the garage and the throwout bearing started making a horrible sound. I thought with all the free play it had that I was safe and not risking having the throwout bearing spining all the time. This is already the second bearing in about 10,000 miles. If anyone can walk me through the process of doing this properly, I would appreciate it.
3 inches is too much play. Adjust it to about 1" - 1.25" until you feel pressure using a tape hooked to the clutch pedal and measuring from center of steering wheel. I am no expert on this but this has always served me well.
Get under it, take the spring off on the linkage. Then you can get a hold of the fork and move it back and forth to tell exactly how much free play you have.
