Talking Asking the impossible....

Alrighty, i have come to the conclusion of some new 305/70r16 tires for my truck, but here comes the hard part, i need a tire that will last me a long time, but also offer me some nice grip whenever i need it. I know that most of my time will be spent on pavement, but for that other 25 % of the time that im at the beach, or in the mud, i need somthing that wont let me down! I know its probably impossible to have the both of best worlds... I've been looking at some BFG all-terrain ko, Nitto Terra grapler, and Goodyear Wrangler AT/S, any feedback would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Almost everyone will say the BFG is a great tire. Four Wheeler magazine just did a test on the Terra Grappler tire in last month's issue. They said it was very quiet and smooth on the street, did well in sand and loose dirt, did OK on rocks, and not so good in mud. Pretty much what you'd expect from an all-terrain type tire. Don't know about the Goodyears.

Get the BFG allterrain. They do everything very well, exept really nasty mud and clay...then they aren't so hot.

The BFG's are a good overall tire. Sort of noisy on the road (my Geolanders are quiter), they have really good sand traction and snow is okay(but if you're at the beach, you may not have to worry about that), but I found that certain types of mud make them racing slicks. I don't know what kind of mud you have, but the stuff I had I had to get the tires up to about 50mph to even start to clean themselves.

I have no idea on the other tires you mentioned.

Thought id share my thoughts...
I have BFG Allterrains..I like mud..they dont.
Hmm yeah i guess they arent bad in sand either. But then again it would be a different story if i had a locking rear.
And maybe becuase i want a more 'agressive' tire aswell.
But overall..they arent bad i guess.

*cheers*

If i get those big tires, am i going to have to crank up the torsion bars myself? or will the people at discount do it... i doubt it, so with that said, how would i go about doing all of that, and will it lessen the life of the tires or the torsion bars? thanks for the help

See this about torsion bars and the side effects. As to whether or not a shop will do it, I would think so. You just need to ask them for a definite answer.

I think you're right Rusty.

I guess I got to thinking more about tires, and then got sidetracked with an earlier torsion bar post.

If the tires don't fit, I hear some chrome bumper crying as it is being cut.

well instead of risking it, i really dont want to cut any bumpers, what about the 295/75r16, they are taller tires, but they are also a little narrower, probably alot meaner looking to! would those fit, or would it being taller rub? sheesh i'm really lost, and dont want to spend all that money buying tires that i find out later i could have got somthing bigger... thanks for you help

295's should be okay.

I know that 305's require bumper trimming on a 93 F250.

Any tire shop should test fit the tires for you just to be safe. My brother has 305's on his 93 F250 and they had to cut almost 1/2" taper out of the bumper. It doesn't look that bad, but I don't believe in trimming parts to make tires fit.

my friend just got some of the new Super Swamper trXus STS's for his truck, they have great road manners and are good offroad tires, they accel in the sand and snow. he likes them a lot, and he drives his truck all over the place and they have hardly worn down.
