Escape Brake Lights
Escape Brake Lights
My Dad has an Escape, a 2007. Both lower brake lights are inoperative, the Center High Mount Stop lamps works, as does the brake/turn signal terminals in the trailer plug. I can't find a fuse that is for the lower brake lights only and the fuses for the CHMS light are fine. The bulb for the left side is fine and there is no power to the left bulb holder on the brake light terminal, I did not check the right side. I also found 2 switches on the brake pedal. The tail lights and turn signals work fine and there has never been any collision damage. Any help with this would be appreciated, a wiring diagram or circuit description would be great.

There is no separate fuse for the stop lamps.
All the lighting is controlled by the Smart Junction Box which, other than the fuses and several relays, does not have any other serviceable components on it. Most likely a non-replaceable relay has failed and the SJB will require replacement. However, before reaching that conclusion, a technician should check for correct input signals to the SJB and should verify there are no pushed, bent, or corroded pins on the connectors.

I would assume(I know, *** of U and me), that since the high mount and the trailer plug are working correctly that the Smart Junction Box is getting the correct signals. Where is the box located? Is there any other name for it? Can we get one from NAPA or is it Ford only?
The SJB is located under the front of the center console. There is an access panel for the fuses on the passenger side.
I'd say it's likely going to be a dealer (or a very well equipped independent) repair as the module's configuration must be uploaded into a scan tool, the part replaced, then the module must be re-programmed with the saved data.
In any event, it won't be inexpensive for what should be an easily repairable fault.

not sure about the escapes but alot of newer vehicles the turn signals and brakes run off seperate wires, how many wires going to the brake/signal bulb?? also some use seperate wiring for trailer. could still be a broken wire

Dad talked to a guy who is the shop foreman in a Ford dealership. He also does repairs out of his shop at home. He is in agreement that it is the SJB. However he says there is no downloading/programming involved, it is just R&R. It will cost about $110.
Well, someone is mistaken - either the Ford factory service docs about replacement modules or the mechanic.
Good luck with it and let us know how it turns out.
That's close to the wholesale price for the SJB. Retail part plus shop labor is usually makes this a $6-800 repair job.
