I have an 05 4x4 xlt and will be lifting it 4-6 inches and cant decide on the width of the wheel. Going with kmc matte blk rockstars 20x8.5 or 20x10? Going to run a 35 tall tire. They are on sale at summit for 266!! Got to get em.
10" will give you a more aggressive stance with better handling. Your tread will stick out past the fenders. 8.5" will fit more like OEM and it is plenty of rim for a 35x12.50 tire.
I would go 10"... but keep in mind you'll wear out ball joints and wheel bearings faster than you would with the 8" rim.
With that lift and a 10" rim it is possible that your tire will swing out far enough to hit your bumper, not a huge deal, it is easy to space your bumper forward.
I could tell you a lot more if you told us the backspace and offset of the rims. Be aware that anything over 4.5" of backspace is bad for the Excursion on account off the front leaf springs. If it has 4.75" or 5" or more of backspace it was designed for the newer Super Duty trucks with the coil over suspension. Coil overs can handle/clear more backspace.
your 10" wide rim should have an offset of around -25mm and your 8.5" rim should have an offset of around -12mm. If the numbers are close to that, either wheel should work great.
A lot of states have laws about tread outside the fenders, so you may have to add flares to be legit.
We have laws like that where I live but no one seems to care, I see trucks with wide tires sticking way out all the time.

here is my thinking. x is silver and i like the look of the pocket flares. they will be dipped in a black and silver skull pattern. cant decide on rockstars or blk/machined hoss? and i dont want them sticking way out past the fender! back space was like 4.56 on the 10"sWheel, XD 795 Hoss, Aluminum, Black/Natural, 20 in. x 9 in., 8 x 170mm Bolt Pattern, 4.530 in. Backspace, EachWheel, XD 775 Rockstar, Aluminum, Black, 20 in. x 10 in., 8 x 170mm Bolt Circle, 4.560 in. Backspace, Each
Any of those wheels should fit fine, with the pocket flares you won't have to worry about them sticking out. Get the wider wheel, it will look better because it'll match the flares. If you get the narrower rim you might end up with too much flare, which looks bad to me.
I am running a 20X10 with 35X13.50-20's with a 4" F250 lift that puts me up about 5.5". At full steering lock, the outside edge of the tire will rub on the bumper. Not too big of a deal, just be aware.

Get 4 longer bolts for the bumper, and something to space it out, pile of washers would work for a small space... I have some square tube going vertical with a couple holes drilled through it, that moved my bumper out 3" or so.
Its a Revtek 4" lift for an F250. I got an amazing deal on it. I wouldn't suggest it for a first choice. Revtek's spring eye bushings don't last long. But I love the stance. With the RAS on the rear it sits nice and level.
