Damned 17" wheels

After driving on the beach it became obvious my stock LT265/70R 17's are not gonna cut it. 33X12.5's will fit well with no lift but can't find a major brand of tire that offers that size. Anyone else had the same problem? Or do we have to wait till the tire makers catch up with the wheel size?

Kinda confused... Do you currently have 15's and want to go to 17's? or do you have 17's and want to go to a 33X12.5? Was the "15" a typo?

Like to try to help you out, but....

DS

PS- just did a quick search: BF Goodrich has a 315/70X17" All-Terrain T/A KO tire. That calculates out to 34X12.4X17. That's pretty darn close!

DS - I see the comparison but, the LT 315 (according to BFG needs a wheel width range of 8.5" to 10". My wheels are 7.5" wide.

i would suggest you either look for a little narrower tire or get some wider wheels.

Look at Nitto's Terra Grappler AT tire. It is a 295/70R17 (or something like that) It is about the closest thing I could find to the size you listed. Alot of guys on ford-trucks.com have had good luck with these tires. Availability might be a problem, but discounttire.com deals with these tires, and might be your best bet.

A-ha!, that does create a problem, doesn't it? Maybe a bit narrower tire? Or, like others have suggested, wider wheels? (but that rings up a bill, doesn't it?).

Maybe look at it from this angle: What is the largest tire that my 7.5" wheels will accommodate? Most here on FTE agree that a 285 width is about the max that "should be" (not "CAN be") put on a 7" (or 7.5" wheel). Is that going to be wide enough for what you wanted? or will you need to go to a wider wheel?

Just some food for thought...

DS

Don't woory about the wheel width, they will work fine and you'll never notice the difference. As far as driving on the beach goes, just air down to 15 - 18 lbs and you will be supprised at the performance. You will still need to air down with the bigger tires, they don't make much difference. The narrower wheels will help keep the beads seated too.

I run 37 x12.50's on 7 and 7.5 inch wheels all the time on the road and in offroad racing, there will be no problem. I would'nt own a wheel over 8 inches wide for any 12.50 wide tire.

That's misleading, just because that combo has worked for you, doesn't necessarily make it right. If you feel comfortable thats all good, but don't tell someone there will be no problems.

Manufacturers have a specified wheel width for a reason. On a 40K truck, it's amazing that people try to save a couple hundred bucks, and risk other peoples well being in the process.

DZari do yourself a favor ... stick to something that fits, or get another wheel/tire combo.

merkstang,
33x12.5x17 converted to metric is 315/65R17.

There Really Isnt An Acurate Size That Will Convert To A 33x12.50r17.
A 315/65r17 Would Be Over 33" Tall. 33" Ties Are Rounded Up In Size Not Down , Usually From About 32.6".a 305/65r17 Would Actually Be Closer In Diameter, But Approx 1/2" Narrower. A 285/70r17 Would Be Considered A 33" Tire And Will Fit The Stock Wheels....mark
