I just bought a 2001 V10 2wd X and looked at the hitch receiver and saw it was rated to 8700 lb.
It has the Ford label on it, it's original. I have a picture of it.
I put a picture of it in my garage.
I called ford and they checked the VIN, they don't understand the label either. It's definitely a factory V10.
The discoloration is just dirt.
I looked underneath and the bolts for the bumper look new(er)/clean, but the bolts for the receiver don't look new.
Everything I've seen says 10,000 so this label is really throwing me off. I thought maybe it's a hitch off a V8, but aren't all X hitches the same?
The 2WD V8's have a tow rating of 6100#'s (3.73) and 7600#'s (4.10's)...
I guess it is possible that this is a receiver off of a V8...but you said the bolts don't look new...
I'll guarantee you that a hitch off of a Navigator will not fit on an Ex...
Yes per my understanding...all Ex hitches are the same...but remember there are TWO versions we've known about...the "earlier" versions with the 10K/1K rating and they use 14mm mounting bolts and the 12.5K/1250 rating which use the 18mm mounting bolts...from everything we can tell...the receivers between those two are IDENTICAL but the mounting hardware is different.
I guess it is possible that someone just switched the label...does it look like that could have happened???
The only thing I could come up with is that the 4x2 has a GVWR of 8900# whereas the 4x4 is rated for 9200#. That 300# difference is consistent with the 8700# rating on your decal compared to the 10000# rating most of us have seen. That seems a pretty weak case, though, considering the specs at the bottom of this sheet say that both have the same max trailer tow of 10000#. (Although one place on that page says the 4x4 can only pull 9600 with the more common 3.73 gears while the 4x2 can supposedly pull 10000# with the same engine and gear ratio? I'm wondering how accurate some of that information is.)
4x2's typically have a slightly higher tow rating since they are lighter from a curb weight perspective...
So engine and gearing being the SAME and the only difference being 4wd or 2wd...the 2wd will almost always have a slightly higher tow rating.
This sure is a mystery...
Take a look at one more thing.
When the receiver comes from the factory it has "shear" bolts...which are basically riveted bolts with no head or nut...you can see them on the mounts...are those shear bolts still there?
