I am looking to purchase an X in the near future. My problem is I cannot find any with the 4.30 rear. My wife is against the diesel so i am limited to V-10 . I tow a 6K lb TT regularly and an 8500lb TT a couple times a year (short distances). I am uneasy about pulling my big TT with the 3.73 rear since my dealer says the hitch is rated at 500 lb tongue weight and the GCWR is only 17K lbs. My tongue wt alone is close to 900 lbs. The class 4 hitch on my 1/2 ton Burban is rated 800 tow and 8000 WD. I can't imagine the X having such a low hitch rating. Anyway, what are your thoughts about pulling 8500 lb TT with an X with the V-10, 3.73? Thanks a lot!
The 3.73 ratio Excursion is rated to tow UP TO 9000 lbs with a WD hitch depending on the year.
With a 4.30 ratio, it is rated up to 11000 lbs with a WD hitch depending on year.
Look at my signature. there are two links. one for owners manuals, and one for the Ford Towing guide for each year. Read those, and you will see what the Excursion can do.
Never listen to the dealer. They don't always know much. Read the manufacturers specs and guides.
My 2004 Ex has the 3.73 gears. I towed a 6000lb TT last summer with it, no problems. My hitch is rated for 1250lbs. With a W/D set up I am rated at 9600lbs. My new TT has a dry weight of 7700lbs and it probably weigh 9ooolbs when loaded up to camp. I will upgrade to a reese dual cam in the 1200lb rating. Your dealer is wrong.
I posted this in your visitor message center in response to yours to me, but I figured it would be good to post it here too.
The V10 Excursion will handle that load with no problem. Those V10's are excellent engines and the hitch will always be rated low to cover Ford's liability.
Lots of guys routinely tow outside the rated hitch rating with no problem. I don't, but I do tow my 10k lb dump trailer (no weight distribution hitch) and my 10k lb travel-trailer (with a WD hitch) with no problems.
The Excursion is built on the 3/4 ton platform. That chassis is the same one they use for the F250's/350's, with a few modifications to the rear portion to accommodate the difference between the Ex and the 250's.
Check out the V10 forum. Those guys have a ton of great info and will help you get the most out of your V10, no matter what condition you're driving in.

PS - Hopefully Joe (X_Hemi_Guy) will chime in. He has a V10 and tows A TON, and is an encyclopedia of information when it comes to All-Things-Towing and Excursions.
Just today, I went to the concrete place and they loaded 3 yards of sand into my dump trailer for me. Those are 1.5 tons per yard so that's 9,000 lbs plus the 3,500 lbs trailer. 12,500 lbs and my limiting factor was that I didn't have a tarp on it so I had to slow down to just under 60 on the interstate. (Quick two exit trip.) Accelerated just fine, handled just fine, AND most importantly, stopped just fine. Now, backing that up the customer's driveway was another story. Glad I have 4wd low! That was a steep driveway.
Then when I left, I just got thru the intersection outside the Jackson, MS airport as they were blocking off all traffic. Michelle Obama was visiting and I guess she thinks she's special. lol

my wife never wanted me to get a diesel but I bought it any way, now she loves it & does not mind the smell or the noise (06 F350 6.0L). I love driving it too,I enjoy the fuel milage & I feel safer in it,Gigger
