Stuck Proportioning valve???

Got the 77 home (finally) Discovered the left caliper was hanging up. New caliper & hoses had already been installed, I'm thinking its the valve. Suggestions on how to clean or unstick said unit?

easy to take apart and clean... keep it all in order, and do NOT tear any of the lip seals and whatnot, they're hard to find new ones (tho very possible to do so).

on another note, It is entirely possible, and somewhat probable that this is not your problem.

The valve responsible for delaying fluid to the front brakes is common to both the front left and front right; so it's not likely that the proportioning valve is the problem if one side works and the other doesn't. I'd pull the left wheel off and have another look.

i'd buy the valve not being the issue, however, to get the truck home, we pinched off the brake hose, cracked the bleeder valve to back the caliper off, and drove 80 miles. Never had an issue. Leads me to believe the valve has a chunk of crud in it. Other 3 brakes were flawless.

yeah, probably a good bit of junk in that line.

I find it a good policy to blow out all the brake lines and clean everything in the system when I get an old truck. Far too often you start replacing parts and ignore the old muddy lookin stuff in the lines.

duly noted. I'll start by pulling lines & blowing 'em out & see what i can find. as for the original question, if i get that far into it, i'm pulling the valve & at least give it a good cleaning. Brakleen, denatured alcohol, Bud Light, what would be your cleaning fluid of choice?

brake kleen, carb cleaner, whatever. compressed air blow it out and get everything good.
take everything apart and clean it.
Also when rebleeding take your time and make sure there is no air at all... I've had an air pocket get hot and lightly apply a brake....
This happens more often for me with the passanger side caliper as the line goes around the engine and gets mega hot.

clean!

Seems much more likely a sticky, rusty piston in the caliper than the pro. valve.

Edit: Doh, just reread the post, see you have a new caliper!

Yeah old style, that was the one I bought as "the daily driver"

hole in the radiator, fuel line split and spraying on intake (which was nice actually as it plugged the massive intake leak), trans would puke fluid whenever you parked it, etc etc. Had one workin brake.... that was the front driverside caliper.
Guy told me I could drive it home it was such a great truck, lucky I had a trailer handy.

one of my classic buy an $800 truck and spend $3000 to make it a $2000 truck :-) Ohh well, not looking to sell it, and it's fun to drive.

I'd take the caliper back and exchange it for another one if taking it apart and greasing the sliders doesn't work. Could have had **** in your lines, too. If you get a chunk of rust in any caliper, even a new one, it can hang up. Its not a bad idea to flush some fresh fluid through the lines while you are swapping calipers to try and clean out any junk, but honestly, if you are getting rust and **** at the calipers the lines are on the way out and need changed asap. As mentioned, the prop valve split is front to back, so its highly unlikely its the culprit for your stuck caliper on one side.
